This happens to me when I'm very anxious or upset, and when I'm asked to speak suddenly or unexpectedly. I'll lose my words and only be able to make sounds and gesticulations. Sometimes I'm able to spit a word out here and there, but it can get stuck on a loop, like a severe stutter, and I'll repeat the word, or part of the word, over and over without adding anything else. It's one of the reasons I have a text-to-speech app and a writing app on my phone, and why I'm teaching myself sign language, so that even if people don't understand what I'm trying to say, they will at least recognise that I'm trying to say something, and not to just write me off as ignoring them or being too in my own world to understand what they're saying.
