hello there,

i have known about Aspergers' since my teens. i always 'knew' it applied to my father but when i was 18 i was able to begin to 'admit' to myself that it most likely applied to me too. i have lead a chaotic life and have only settled into having a proper GP in the last 5 years (i'm 30 now).

i wanted to ask my doctor for a referal but was too shy for years and when 2 years ago, i finally did my doctor tried to medicate me for depression and anxiety. it was awful and a combination of that and bullying at work made me question my sanity for a while.

i got off the medication and my doctor sent me on a 6 session course of counselling in the surgery with a general counsellor. i think that i was lucky to be offered that service and she was useful in some respects but anytime i mentioned any aspergers' 'symptoms' she said, "oh, your only saying that because you read about it on the internet". well, i can assure you that if i was even able to remember in detail and fake a whole syndromes symptoms then i'd be putting those skills to far better use - on the stage. she said that i have problems with expressing myself because i suffer from low self esteem. yes it is difficult to hold yourself in esteem when you feel unable to maintain stability in even the most basic areas of life, but i do not have low self esteem. grr.

anyway the good news is that she did assure me that she has re-writen my referal "just so as i can be reassured that i do NOT have AS" (she says). this was nearly 2 years ago now.

is this length of wait usual for Londoners?

does anyone know how i find a group counselling session for social skills?

I don't know about London but I only had to wait about 4 or 5 months for mine. I live in Manchester and there was nowhere round here so had to go to Sheffield. I think 2 years is longer than it should be.

Your doctor sounds like a JERK anyway! BESIDES, if you wanted to pick something to get aid, money, fame, there are better things than AS!

Yeh, I agree. I would suggest you try and change your GP.
I hope everything goes well with getting your assessment anyway :)
