I was adamant that my favorite band was my primary special interest, I've been kind of second-guessing. Do you think that a band could be a special interest? I've experienced what I think have been sensory problems in regards to sounds that don't really apply when I listen to the music I like. What also seems confusing to me is that I hate loud crowds yet I will go to a concert, but only if they're playing. Otherwise I get sick/overstimulated very easily. The thing is they play arenas and they also play fairly loudly.

what are your thoughts? is it possible for it to still be a special interest, even if I'm autistic?

(note that I'm not diagnosed formally, i'm self dx-ed but I'd say i'm still partially in the questioning phase. so if you think i might not be autistic after all don't be afraid to say so.)

You do NOT have to have every single trait to be autistic. You can certainly have a band as a special interest.

I definitely think music can be a special interest. :D

I know all my life I've always been attracted to trying different kinds of music, to the point in fact one time in 11th grade when I was having dinner with some of the people that were in a business club with me a song came on the radio and I identified it down to what version it was. They were amazed their phone brought up the same information as I told them. I felt shy about it at the time, but I later realized it was just my special interests at work in a way others can relate to.

You're going there for the band, which you like, not for the noise or crowds, which you don't like.

Just as it is to go planespotting or watching motorsports. Not there for the people but for the event

I have two special interests that sometimes contradict each other, Jainism and Autism. Jainism teaches that compassion is a virtue but I've been told I'm so stoic I have the compassion of a brick.

I see - thanks all of you for explaining it in that way, it makes a bit more sense now. :)
