I'm in that situation right now. I haven't had a decent obsession for well over two months now! (OMG help me, I'm becoming more NT!)

Have any of you had this as well?

I definitely still have strong interests, but none of them are new. I have been an animal lover all my life and my interest in Roger Bannister stems from a long-standing interest in running. I have also admired achievers, especially against the odds, and Roger Bannister fits this category.

While I was depressed but unmedicated, I had no obsessions. I was restless but unable to muster up any interest in anything.

No. I can remember having them as a baby even and crying when they were taken away. The more I thought back, the more I realized I have always had them.

I've also had obsessions as far as I can remember, but there have been times where I've been less obsessive about them, when I was depressed in school etc. I've had the same two main obsessions for as long as I can remember as well so they've always been there really, I just get less obsessive sometimes.

I can go weeks, maybe months, without having a real obsession with something. Either that, or I don't notice I am obsessing about something during those times....

I guess I always HAD obsessions, but sometimes failed to act. I think THAT is what REALLY led to depression. I started acting on my interests, and the depression disappeared!

When depressed I'm interested and/or obsessed in nothing.

Dull,
Bland,
Apathy;
Nothing.

These words explain how I feel when depressed.

As others have said, when I'm very depressed I lose interest in nearly everything. I dread that feeling when I think about it, because when I feel that way I start to think that life isn't worth living without my enthusiasm.

I'm not yet 100% clear on what "obsession" means in the AS context. I *guess* that that would include my liking to read about animals-particularly animal intelligence. My keeping up with computer related news, etc. Stuff like that, that I would just call my interests or hobbies. Or am I misunderstanding? Those are ones that are long term, though I'll go off reading about something else, reading everything I can on the net about something else that interests me, but usually just for a few hours.

If those count, then I've probably always had them. If not, then maybe I've never had obsessions?

An obsession is being so interested in something you can't stand not knowing everything about it, including reading every book published on the subject, if the subject is narrow enough. The obsession is pure pleasure where time and space disappear. You stop noticing other things when occupied with it. Sometimes, obsessions get "used up" and you have to find a new one. The spark disappears and you may flounder for a while before a new spark ignites. At least that is how it is fo rme.

I'm often left wondering after an obsession "Why the heck did I get all that stuff?!"

I remember I didn't have an obsession for a few months and it drove me crazy because I felt something was missing and I couldn't stay calm or relaxed so I realized I've always had an obsession with things my whole life and I need an obsesison or I feel bored inside. I was 14 then.

I guess I might fit that then. I do read all the computer news I can until there's nothing left, and same thing for some other things. I used up the internets! Both of them.
