Possibly Getting Tested For Aspergers and/or ADHD
Hello all,
I have been lurking on this website as a guest for a few years now and finally decided to join. I am a 22 year old college student and I have had some suspicions about ADHD and/or aspergers for quite sometime now, and am finally starting to take some sort of action.
I investigated some of the common exhibited behavioral patterns of those who have aspgergers and did it ever match me to a T, at least to a degree. The one thing that really stuck out to me was the fact that aspies tend to get obsessed on a single subject at a time. This is how I have been my entire life. As a toddler, I was obsessed with locks and keys ( I probably collected over 10,000 keys from of 3-6 years of age), got a little older, it became the weather. In grade school during summer vacation, I would spend my free time watching the Weather Channel - up to 10 hours at a time. Behavioral patterns like this have haunted me all the way through adulthood even though the fixation changes from time to time, and at one point I almost flunked out of school because of it (I was playing call of duty for 12 hours a day and skipping class my sophomore of college). When I would play video games, I would get extremely angry, and I destroyed a television , 2 controllers, and 2 cell phones in the course of the year that I had an Xbox until in a fix of rage I finally destroyed the Xbox itself with a sledgehammer. (I also will be seeking help for anger) There have been a few other areas of interest but I am not going to list them for the sake typing space!
A few of the other traits that matched me were the following (some now and as a child):
-Live like a hermit
-General anxiety
-I almost always made friends with children 1-2 years older than myself growing up
-I will not give the other person an opportunity to talk, many of my conversations growing up were one-sided
-Anxiety in social settings outside of a structured environment (I hate parties, especially crowded ones)
-General distaste in meeting new people
-Have never dated
-Daydreaming for extended periods of time
-...ect. (I could make a huge list)
In terms of cognitive abilities:
In elementary school I was placed in a preliminary trial for gifted children (my school had a gifted program for math and a separate gifted program for social studies) and I did NOT pass the trial for the gifted social studies program, however, I continued in advanced math (1-2 years ahead of my peers) until middle school. I know that part of the diagnostics test for aspergers can have the WAIS IV test since I have researched this subject for some time now. Curiosity got the best of me and I found a few demonstrations of the test actually being administered online (albeit in Spanish). From what I witnessed, I would be good at block design, and that is something that I have heard is common in aspies, while my digit span would most likely be not as good. Maybe this is indicative of ADHD. Some other #'s I have from standardized testing are a 1130 Math+Verbal SAT and a 29 composite ACT score.
I guess I am just trying to get as much information as I can about mental health disorders that I may have so I can get some kind of help from a professional if deemed necessary. I really want to mitigate the anxiety that plagues me from day to day (I lose sleep over it) so I decided that one of my first steps would be to finally join this website and start a conversation. If anyone has any questions, comments, or suggestions please don't hesitate.
Thanks!
