.....do you find yourself changing the subjects a lot? If so, does it ever get to the point where you accidentally confuse the person you're talking to?

Thanks in advance.

I always end up doing that. Usually, I can turn any topic that I am talking about with someone to either Doctor Who or my pets.

I'd be happy to talk about our non-human companions as well - we have a lot of non-pet wildlife where we live too, some of which are tame.

But generally no I don't change topic much unless that discussion topic has obviously ended. Generally it's other people that randomly seem to change topics on me!

Subjects which seem related in my mind often are not so to others.

I think that can for NTs as well. In part it depends how we (AS or NT) personally relate to the topics and how obvious the connection is.

Yeah, me too. In my mind, it's all connected. The topics can seem different, but they're not really. But my conversation partners usually wind up confused. Then I do...sometimes.

Awkwardness ensues.

Same here. If I'm talking to someone at work who switches the topic more than once I tend to fall silent or exit the conversation if I can't get them back on point. Especially if the conversation is non-work related to begin with. With friends I don't worry about where the conversations flow unless there is something important I'm talking about.
