I have a very good ability to recall images. It's not perfect, but I can read things in them occasionally and they contain a lot of details some of which I didn't even take any conscious note of at the time. I didn't think it was anything out of the ordinary until a few months ago, and now I'm curious as to how unusual it is especially among autistic people.

I can easily recognize something or someone that I have seen before, but I cannot readily retrieve those memories on my own.

I can't simply recall someone's face, I have to think of a specific instance when I saw them and recall that whole image background and all. It's very odd.

That is called face blindness. I have it. Far as I now it is common in autism. Also not being able to recognize someone outside of the place you are used to seeing them. Like a schoolmate or coworker walks up to while you are at the store and says "hi", and you don't recognize them.

Others with autism are very good at remembering faces.

My ability to recognize faces does seem to be a bit below average and I am occasionally greeted by people I don't recognize who know me but I usually have no trouble recognizing people. What I'm talking about is if for example I wanted to think of an image of my best friend's face like if I wanted to draw him or describe him to somebody, I couldn't just think of his face without it being a specific instance in which I saw him. If he wore something different and got a haircut then I would still recognize him no problem.
