I was responding to someone's post on sensory issues, and I mentioned my problem with touching fir/pine trees, and I realized it sounds a bit odd. I know a lot of people on here have sensory issues, but I was wondering if anyone has that problem in particular. When I'm trimming the tree at Christmas, whenever I touch it, it feels like my hands are burning with irritation and itchiness, although they look completely normal. I have to rub my hands together to try to get rid of the feeling. Needless to say, tree trimming is pretty painful- I just have to try to touch the tree as little as possible. Grass also gives me a burning/itching sensation, but not as badly. Is it an allergic reaction, or a sensory issue? My skin doesn't look red or irritated or anything afterward. Maybe the touch of the many small needles is overwhelming my sensory perceptual system or something. Anyone experience something similar?

I get the same thing with grass. I think it's probably just a slight allergy. You know, nothing major. But it sure makes me itch and sting when no one else has a problem with it!

I haven't noticed a problem with pine trees, but I know what you mean. I have that problem with SOS cleaning pads. I can just barely stand to touch them when they're wet, but when they're dry/right out of the package, I cringe. It makes me want to lick my hands or wet them immediately, because of the horrible feeling. Ewwww, I just got a chill and the creeps, just thinking about touching them.

I hate pine trees, but not because of the feel of them, although I don't really like touching them. I cannot stand to touch velvet and I feel sick if I do.

I think it has to do with allergies. I would suggest a synthetic chrismas tree. You won't have the allergy, and clean-up is easy.

Yeah, I had thought it might be allergies, although I wasn't sure since my skin didn't look irritated. We had a synthetic Christmas tree for a few years, but my parents got sick of it, and wanted a real tree.

Hmmm. I have never thought of it, but when I move to North Carolina, I started to get more high-strung and enjoy things less. I thought it was just because the people were lame. Maybe it is just the fact that there are pine trees everywhere?

I don't like them because wasps are attracted to the sap and I hate wasps

I love pine trees, and I have a very large pinecone collection. I actually order them off ebay too! (yeah, I have "problems".)

I do know that after touching them a lot though, trying to twist cones off, that I do seem to get the same sort of "reaction" as you do. I bet it is a slight allergy. Sometimes after awhile, (much longer then you would ever touch one!) I do break out in little red spots.

I think it sounds like a slight allergy with you, maybe with the slight reaction you now have a negative association with even just "touching" one?

I can't stand touching egg cartons or those trays they give you in drive threw! It gives me the heebee Jeebees!

On my parents' property where I grew up, we have several pine trees behind our house, in front of our pond. So yeah, I'm glad I never had problems with being around or in contact with pine trees.

They put allot of chemicals (herbicides and pesticides) on pine trees. Allot more chemicals are sprayed on them then food crops because, obliviously, people don't eat pine trees. Your allergy could due to a herbicide/pesticide residue on the trees.

A few years ago when walking in a pine tree plantation forest, I found a dozen illegally deposed chemical barrels that had contained herbicides and pesticides. They had irritant "X" and "skull and cross bone" symbols on them (stayed 20 metres from them).

Pine sap is what is used to make, among other things, turpentine, not the most person-friendly substance on earth. Also tar, I believe. Obviously the sap has a noxious chemical in it that causes localized allergic skin responses if not a chemical burn.
