It's never happened to me, but it did happen to a guy on Reddit.

I've been jokingly called "normal."

In the 1980s, people used to ask me if I took "uppers." I told them that I was "high on life."

Note: I've never taken recreational drugs.

It was more of a "wow are you autistic or something?" sort of thing.

Yeah, because I'm studying computer science, all my college/uni friends regurgitate all of the latest reddit/online slang. So starting around 6 months ago, everything stupid/ret*d became "autistic", and when someone had a derp moment, they'd be called an "autist".

There's been a couple times now where I've been called an "autist" as joke/banter/slang, etc. But it's awkward, because a couple seconds later they remember that I actually am, and an awkward silence ensues. I laugh it all off while simultaneously dying inside.

Most people have no clue I'm on the spectrum unless I tell them.

When I was a teen, someone compared me to Ally Sheedy's character in "Breakfast Club." I had not seen the movie (didn't see it until I was in college) so I didn't even know what they meant. Recently I found out that the character is supposed to have Asperger's?

Now that I work in a special school it happens quite often actually (does happen with other people occasionally too). Today as a matter of fact. They comment things like "it's ok we understand here" and "you're in the right place" although I've never told them my diagnosis (just disclosed to my head teacher last week).

I think I have got more obvious and less subtle with AS since working there though, partly because I'm less comfortable because I don't know them properly yet, and maybe partly because it is more accepted to be a bit unusual! And maybe partly because I kind of want them to know even though I don't.

So yes, I'm obviously weird enough that I remind people of autism but don't fit their stereotype enough for them to consider their joke may have hit the mark.

I don't really talk to people, so no.

My grandmother said to me that I could have a 'touch' of Autism, but she is now denying it which is messing with my head :|, my aunt agrees that I could have Autism (Asperger's), I have been referred to local Autism Services so that could help if I can end up getting diagnosed with Asperger's.

Yes, before I was diagnosed.

There's been a couple of times where people have joked that I must be deaf, only to be very embarressed when I told them I am indeed HoH.

The Allison Reynolds charactor has a lot traits associated with Autism stimming: rocking back and forth, incessant nail chewing. Sensory sensativities: She at one point covers her ears and is often cruched over, looking like she is sensory ovewhelmed, very quiet, runs right to the library, but when she does talk is very blunt and sees a psych. But that she was supposed to be an autistic charactor is doubtful because in 1985 when the film was released outside of a literally a few leading edge autism experts Aspergers and anything resembling more then the most severe autism was not recognized. That would not start to happen until three years later with Rain Man. Allison Reynolds is known as the basket case charactor.

Never jokingly, more like insultingly.

I don't recall ever being called autistic in anything but a serious manner in reference to my condition.

This does remind me of a conversation I overheard yesterday in school though. I was recovering from a really bad sensory overload and trying to be alone when a small group walked by. They were not talking about me, they didn't even seem to notice me, but one of them said "I think he may have Asperger's, as in legitimate full on Asperger's". I didn't hear any more of the conversation but I found that kind of interesting.

How did you know it wasn't you? I had a similar story. There was this man who was patronizing and insulting to me in the past, so I usually just ignored him. He later talked to someone. I just had a strong feeling she was telling him I'm autistic. I didn't even know for sure if she knew about my label in the first place. I just had a strong suspicion. Eventually I confronted her and I found out my suspicions were correct and I'm not just being paranoid.

Due to my autistic traits and a belief that child killers and child abusers and serial killers or even the guy last week who stabbed an old guy to death ( 39 stab wounds ) should be given a lethal injection .... a few of my collegues suggested that I should be nicknamed Dexter . I was pretty pleased as I love the character and the program ....
