I find long paragraphs intimidating; if the subject matter interests me: I'll wade into it and read the whole thing.

But I have to take it kind of slow to be able to have reasonably good comprehension/retention.

I get by for someone who had the lowest grades in English during high school. I pretty much taught myself by reading old Sci-Fi….

I used to read well but it's very hard to me now. The longest thing i can read is forum post, but only the short ones and for a short time ;/ I find it hard to understand language in general too. I have no idea why it got like that now.

Some of us are hyperlexic and some are not.

Check first to make sure you don't need glasses. When I was a freshman in college all of a sudden I couldn't read without getting a headache or falling asleep and it turned out I needed glasses.

This is a good point. I was hyperlexic as a child but found that as I became older and progressed through the education system, I struggled with reading.

At university, at the age of 24, I was diagnosed as dyslexic and dyspraxic and as having irlen syndrome (www.irlen.com)
I have also recently been prescribed glasses. Since wearing the glasses and using coloured overlays (for the irlen syndrome) I have become hyperlexic again! It's great!

Perhaps, as aylissa suggests, it is worth getting your eyes tested and telling the optician about the problems you are having. It is perhaps also worth being tested to see if you have dyslexia and / or irlen syndrome.

I can read well but sometimes I'll read a word completely different to the one written and not notice. Other than that, I can read well though.

Thanks for the reminder for all of us about Irlen lenses. I keep meaning to check it out, and I know if I do it'll change my life...

I find I do that, then carry on the scentence a bit and realise it makes no sense. I guess similarily, I can be flicking through a magazine to have a word literally jump out as I pass that page. I go back trying to find it and rarely can...

Although I consider myself a good reader, I am unsure whether my style of reading is good - I think I skim over the words terribly quickly, taking the words with meaning out of it.

I do that as well! I sometimes will skip a line and realise it doesnt make sense. I get tired from alot of reading aswell. If i sit down and read a novel or something like that I go to sleep always afterward.

I can read fine and most sentences are supposed to be rather short. WHY can't you read well? Try working on your weakness.

BTW EVERYONE's an idiot at SOMETHING! That is just a fact, REGARDLESS of who you are. I'm sure everyone here will admit it. It seems the smarter you get an the more you learn, the more obvious it gets. One sign of intelligence is realizing that, and somehow compensating.
