I am originally from the Bronx, New York City.

I was diagnosed with Kanner's Autism when I was 3 years old, in 1964. That was the only autism in existence until 1994.

I didn't speak until age 5 1/2. After that, though, I became very much like an Asperger's person (even though I wouldn't have been diagnosed with Aspergers, ever).

I am a college graduate, and I am married. I have had my same job for almost 36 years. I'm a data entry clerk.

I know you're probably not asking me.

But just in case: Yes, I'm verbal. In fact, people can't get me to shut up!

I could have been diagnosed with it, though I never had the severe distress of changes or frequent stimming in common, so I'm not sure. Still, I talk good and alot.

I didn't even know one can still learn to talk so late, I've always assumed there's a point in time from where it's hardly possible anymore. Were your parents still expecting at that late time that you would eventually start talking? Do you remember what it was like for you, I mean, didn't you speak because you couldn't or were you just not that interested in talking at that time?

a little late, but i struggle talking although im better at writing, MUCH bettter at writing. i have learned to say basic commands and questions though throughout my life, like "Why is the sky blue?"

i asked my aspie bro Chris about the time he played the game "katamari damacy" and he told me "you were three years old at that time and when you were three years old you couldn't speak at all really"

I think i have a mild form of echolalia were i kind of repeat things (in my mind, while writing, thinking and sometimes say it) i read from books or other people. i learned how to read before i could speak, i think. and i love animal books and funny fiction. :P

This is a great question. Do any late talkers remember their thought process before they started to talk or when they just started talking?

My little brother was not very understandable until he was 7 or 8. He spoke almost entirely in his own made up words. Does anyone with a unique language system like this remember their transition to speaking their "second language" of a regular language?

I don't recall any "thought process." I don't even remember that I wasn't able to talk! It's weird, really.

I know somebody in Trinidad who did not walk until age 4, did not talk until age 10. Yet, now, he's an auto mechanic, and he doesn't appear impaired in any way.

It's possible that I didn't feel the need to talk.

What I do remember about my pre-speech days was an ever-present, free-flowing FEAR of everything.
