I was curious as to how many of you feel about the "math wiz" stereotype associated with Asperger's syndrome, as according to my research and personal observations it appears to largely be a myth. There are individuals with Asperger's that are very good at math, no doubt about that, but being good at math certainly does not preclude having Asperger's and is most definitely not part of the diagnostic criteria. I strongly suspect I have it, for instance, and I am very much mediocre at math (though I'm eerily good at estimation and guessing people's ages) as my real skill is writing, particularly writing skills associated with analytical thought.

My math skills are close to null.

I was good at math up until about 16* or so, then my abilities started to deteriorate.

I'm good at some aspects of maths and awful at others.

I like mathematics especially things like algebra and geometry though just spent an afternoon getting some algebraic equations and algebraic combinations wrong :?

You just described me. My math skills are mediocre at best, but people constantly comment on my writing skills. I'm a cop, which means 60% of my job is writing. I also write stories about my exploits and am working on a novel. I was a history major in college, which largely focuses on research and writing.

My guess is your observations are correct.

I can't do math to save my life, but I can program computers like a wiz.

I fit the stereotype. People will be throwing out numbers and I'll have percentages, differences, etc calculated before they turn to talk to me. It took me a long time to realize that NTs don't care about completely accurate math answers (and may make fun of you for providing them).

I pick up math concepts very quickly, I also forget them just as quickly. If I'm currently studying math then I have no problem, I aced calculus in collage with no studying other than doing my homework and attending class, however a month after I completed the class I had forgotten most of what I had learned and now can't do calculus to save my life.

I'm quite good at math but I think that the stereotype is just a myth.

The one area of Math that I would call myself a "wiz" at would be statistics. Namely because it is all about finding patterns in numbers and then inferring what those patterns mean in the real world. I love patterns in numbers.

My children and I both are fascinated with numbers. I have a major mental block with math, however. I can remember phone numbers I haven't dialed since 1985, the license plate my parents had on a car they have not owned since the early 80s and other fairly meaningless strings of numbers. I am, when not inhibited by the "block", very good at math. However, I can be calculating right along and suddenly everything on the page is a clutter of meaningless numbers and symbols. My mind just shuts down. Pressing at that point only leads to a meltdown.

My aspie struggles with Math. It's a common misconception. He's 100% science!

I'm good at basic math, but I'm horrible at the more complex mathematics.
