Hello y'all, I'm conducting an independent research project for school that's 50% of my final grade.
For my project, I'll be taking individuals' DNA samples and recording the height of each person. I'm checking for the intelligence gene and seeing if there's an correlation between that gene (dysbindin-1 gene (DTNBP1)) and height since there is a positive correlation between height and intelligence.
I just wanted to know if anyone could help me with ordering supplies (e.g., what restriction enzymes and primers do I need, what procedure do I use for isolating the gene, cost, delivery time, and other ordering info) and offering general input.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Really? Is there any basis for this hypothesis, I would have thought that taller people are perceived to be more intelligent in general but I reckon that a lot of this is to do with psychological reasons and perception of authority,

This does not belong in love and dating... moving it to general discussion, tho not sure what it has to do with ASDs either.

It is unfortunate that taller people are considered more intelligent. I am short (5' 1") and don't consider myself unintelligent.

Same here, I'm 5' 1" and I know I'm not unintelligent.

CRAP! So you mean if I didn't stunt my growth via legal and illegal substances I would be even smarter? Dammit.

What's intelligence?

I’ve never understood what “intelligent” means; I mean how you can even possibly quantify it when there are so many objective variables (probably close to an infinite amount)? It's beyond insane…. I guess "intelligent" people know the answer to this.

I'm 185 cm. and I'm as dumb as a doorknob going by my objective achievements (but an objective and arbitrary IQ test says I’m a genius!) .

Agreed. Intelligence is too vague of a word. Someone can be wise but stupid, or intelligent but nonfunctional, ect.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/quer ... &DB=pubmed

I would do a search on medline for DTNBP1 and look up the full articals at your school
and see what procedures were used to detect the gene.

My guess is they used outside labs and paid alot of money for those services.

the 'intelligence gene' dysbindin-1 may be associated with general cognitive ability

I don't know that they neccesarily are; that was just an idea. I do remember once reading about a study that said that eliminating all other variables (including 'intelligence' - I can't remember how they measured this, probably IQ which wouldn't really say much IMHO) taller men and women were more likely to get promotions/better jobs etc. as they are perceived to be more authoratative and competent. I don't know how strong the correlation was but I wouldn't let it bother you to be honest, I think that if you are good at what you do/intelligent/etc. then, hopefully it will shine through.

I saw a show on this once and intelligence and tallness was a perception thing not based in reality.

Just because I am 5"1' and not the brightest bulb in the box doesn't say anything about short people in general....i come from a family of very intelligent sort people...
I just um...have an unconventional sort of intelligence...
