I used to see shiney objects floating in the air at night before I went to sleep. I thought they were fairies and they would float through my hand if I tried to touch them. It was a real light show every night. I know of a few other people who experienced this. Anybody else see things that no one else could see ?

In the absence of light, the background noise caused by the random firing of the components of your neurological optical system can be perceived. These are usually seen as abstract shapes of various subdued colors.

Yeah that's either normal optical noise, or sometimes a migraine thing can intensify it (with or without the headache). I see all that stuff very clearly in the daytime too.

Shut up! I'd forgotten all about that! 8O

Damn, I don't recall noticing that since I was 7 or 8 years old...

yeah I still have this LOL. I used to think I could see air molecules, yet I cant see two feet in front of me without my glasses, and at night I am significantly visually impaired.

I used to see a lot of that too, though a lot of times I would see distinct images/objects projected where I was looking. I would see one thing, like a random face, then a few seconds later it would shift into something else, like a chair or a dog or a tree...anything. It was kind of like a kaleidoscope of specific images morphing into new images as my brain relaxed and turned my day over in my head. This was mostly when I was a kid...and it kind of scared me yet fascinated me. Hardly ever happens now. I guess I have too many grown-up thoughts in my head to let my mind return to that state.

Can you explain what you see in more detail?

When I was a kid (4-8, somewhere there) I used to see, vividly see, a single glowing object floating through my room, usually circling around my bed, and making a mechanical noise that sounded like "turn turn turn turn". It was sort of like a tiny flying saucer, and glowing bright.

Parents thought I was having nightmares. No, hell no I was wide awake and this object was always the same, and it scared the piss out of me.

That was my weird brain lying to me. Obviously it wasn't anything real, not unless the aliens were spying on a 4 year old.

I've experienced the same thing, as a child.

I used to see red and black tiny spheres at bedtime when I was young. I thought I was seeing air molecules somehow - but then I knew that was impossible so I decided I was seeing some type of cells in my retina. I hate to say this - but I wish those were all I could see - I'd see monsters, skeletons, tigers leaping at me - in the dark with eyes open or closed. I had night terror. I was too young to know what hypnogogic hallucinations were - but now I do. Like a lot of Aspies I can visualize things really well. I'm glad I found this site - I just can't believe other people saw the same (or close to the same) things that I did! Did anyone have sleep paralysis upon waking up too? I had that occasionally until I was about 13 or 14 - then it stopped.

I didn't see floaties like that but if I closed my eyes sometimes I'd see varying pulsing lights or patterns. I do not know what causes this.

Yes I have sleep paralysis. That is outright creepy too as it seems like something sinister is in the room and I can't move.

This is one of my most vivid memories of early childhood. I was about four and it may have went on for a year or two, I don't know. It always happened at night in total darkness. They were objects in differant locations within the room. They floated very slowly, Sometimes they barely moved. I could turn my head and when I looked back and they would still be there.
They sparkled, like glitter and they reminded me of ships. Sometimes they would land on my bed or float right past me. They were not brightly lit. This happened when I was wide awake and sitting up in bed. I could only see in them if I looked AT them.
They were never scary.
I have NLD, the pictures in my head are dim and only last for a second, they are like snap shots with blurred edges. I can't see anything clearly in my head not even the faces of my children.
Maybe this was a misfired imagination, I do have a good imagination even withoutthe "images". Weird, I know.

Welcome Aspieman, I`m new here too.

I usually had to have the hall light on all night with my bedroom door open slightly as I dreaded the dark when growing up.
Strange noises e.g. a dredger in the harbour working at night would scare me and strange smells such as a chicken processing factory would disturb me too.

Now if I can't sleep I switch on the tv then soon I fall asleep.

Thanks! I would beg my parents to stay with me in the room until I fell asleep. I needed some light in the room and for the door to be opened a bit as well to let the light in. The darkness frightened me so badly I cannot even describe it in words. I had the night terrors and fear of the dark until shortly after I turned 9. I still had persistent nightmares through my early 20's though. Death themes - being chased by skeletons with glowing red eyes - wish I had a nickel for every time I dreamed that. I still have nightmares about twice a year - some are so bad I traumatically suppress the memory of them.

And to twist a well-known quote - "TV is a vast wasteland - and cable is an even vaster wasteland". :)
