I am a graduate student in physics and I often study in restaurants. Due to the fact that I am sleep deprived as a result of studying so many nights, sometimes I have to sleep on a table for a while before continuing reading. Everyone gets mad at me when i sleep on the table and I have no idea why. I know it has nothing to do with keeping others from using the table -- after all it is okay if I *study* for many hours straight, the only thing that is not okay is if I sleep, even for 10 minutes. Does anyone have any ideas of why is it so wrong? And do you think people should be more tolerant?

If you are asleep, the restaurant is losing money because the table cannot be used. If you are awake, there is the possibility that you could order something. People shouldn't have to be more tolerant of that. I also doubt, if you are studying until you are exhausted, that you are getting the most out of your studies.

providing you bought something and keep in with the staff it should be okay. why else call it a 'restroom' huh?

mind you, this is coming from someone who frequently falls asleep on public transport between work and school.

i dont know what you mean by "Restaraunt"

if you're talking 5 star... then you should at least have a tie on while you sleep...

but if it's like... IHOPS, wafflehouses... and places where they serve non-fancy coffees &/or it's within walking range of a campus...

then I wouldn't let it bother me.

Have any of the employees asked you to leave?

I tend to leave nice tips (nothin crazy) when i hold up one of their tables for an extended time...

but then, ive worked in restaruants too

I think this is a basic rule they have to keep out homeless people who will only buy a cup of coffee and just want to have a place to rest and get off their feet.I know it is not logical....if the place is not packed...they are not likely to use every table anyway. But each waitress is assigned a "section" and if you are in theirs, then that is one les table that someone can sit in their section.

Don't expect complete logic. When I was homeless,I used to go into fast food places and clear the tables of food that people had left on their trays.I needed the food,it was going to go into the garbage,anyway...and I was helping the staff by clearing the tables of people to lazy to clear their own trays....who was it hurting? It didnt matter...they would run me off and threaten to call the police.I wasnt even "using up their tables" but taking the left-overs "to go".People hate anyone who act "different."

i would think they wouldn't mind if they see you have a ton of books out and about and tend to leave a tip behind...

and you're not like at a table in the middle of the room or in a front window area whilst you drool away...

that does kinda detract from the ambiance.

I don't think there is anything actually wrong putting your head down on the table to take a quick nap or something. But like someone said, the restaurant probably has a policy against sleeping because they don't want it turn into a hostel for homeless people or drunk people. Also it probably freaks people out because they just don't know what to make of it.

If homelessness is their concern it should be easy to find out that I am not homeless.

hey Roman!
You can't sleep on the tables in restaurants, man! Its a health code violation! If you fell asleep in the booth, I would have my staff wake you and ask if you were ready to move on. If you climbed up on the table for a snooze, I would either have the staff wake you and tell you to get the hell out! or just call the cops. Geeze, it is not a motel! Just because you use it as your study hall doesn't mean it's your dorm room.

I am an Aspie and I owned a restaurant once, and I have worked in restaurants (greasy spoon short order to franchise-types to hotels) and believe me, it was not tolerated. It is not just YOU that is not allowed, and dude, it's not a democracy, you don't get to plead your case!
And if you press your issue, they might 86 you for good (86 is restaurant code for not allowed in the premises again) and enforce it with the police involved.

anyway, think about it, you on the table your FEET on the table, drooling and snoring and scratching your privates (hey, what do YOU know about what happens when you are sleeping?)

not good, dude, just a bad scene.

Then you misunderstood. Because I am sitting on a chair. The only thing I do is lay my head on the table.

People might be worried, because it's unusual to sleep in a restaurant. They might suspect you're on drugs or drunk or something. There's nothing wrong with the act itself, it's just that others do NOT do that kind of thing, which for most people is enough reason to get angry. It's not logical but you are gojng to have to accept it.

I seen a lot of students sleeping on the tables in study halls. So who knows may be *IF* sleeping in restaurants were allowed, then students would of slept there too.

That's something entirely different. In study halls, nobody is responsible, so nobody minds. In a restaurant, the staff have to check on people with unusual behavior, after all there might be something seriously wrong with that person and they're going to be in trouble afterwards if they didn't help.
And if sleeping in restaurants was allowed, a lot of homeless people would take advantage of that fact, which in turn is going to bother the other guests. After all, nobody wants to eat in a public dormitory.
I suggest you try to sleep at night.
