Has anyone seen the second Spiderman film? I was watching it yesterday and it occurred to me that Peter Parker faces similar problems to an aspie. Because of his secret identity he finds it hard to hold down a job, maintain a relationship and do well at school. This leads him to question who he is. Should he be Spiderman?

He tries to walk away from his secret identity but finds he cannot. Being Spiderman is who he is...his calling, his vocation. Even though it causes him heartache he finds he cannot escape his fate; Cannot deny his destiny.

For me being an aspie is a bit like being Spiderman. My secret identity (as an aspie) makes relationships difficult, distracts me from work and makes success in the everyday life difficult. But when I'm swinging from building to building (using my aspie skills) I cannot deny my calling. I cannot deny who I am…or escape my fate as an aspie.

I feel one of Stan Lee's strengths is his ability to depict his heroes rl personas as just that, real people. I often have thought to myself that I feel like a superhero - then I laugh at myself, because I don't have 'super' powers.

With great Aspie-ness comes great responsibility :)

I must admit, the detachment Peter Parker faces on a daily basis rings an uncomfortable number of bells. Stan Lee created Peter to be a typical loner outsider (who likely was very similar to a good percentage of his readers), who had trouble with relationships, with getting regular employment, and with generally holding his real life together, but who was also a scientific genius and sterling example of how to carry oneself.
