Does anyone know anything about alphviruses? I just had this nasty one and am still suffering weeks later. Most people around here got over it after a few days but some of us are still hurting. I thought that the body dealt with a virus and got rid of it but those of us that still suffer get tired quickly and apparently might hurt for 2 years. I can't work out why.

Chikungunya or dengue fever, otherwise known as "bone-break fever" is not pleasant. Have you ruled out malaria? There is no vaccine for chikungunya so it must be prevented by eradicating the source of the disease. You get it from mosquitoes and from my understanding, those man-made ruts in the road (from tyres and the like) are really bad. Eradicate every mosquito you can from the area where you live.

I live in New Zealand but my work takes me all over the Pacific Islands and to places like Papua New Guinea hence why I know a bit about tropical diseases.

If you need more specific information, let me know your symptoms and I will look up information to try help you find what is happening to you.

Chikungunya is the same family as dengue. We have both here. You are right about the bone pain. It is so bad I couldn't lift a bucket of water. After a day and a half the pain changed to just severe all of a sudden - like a switch being pressed. I can't stop mozzies completely but we have a net over the bed and my wfe put one in the water storage tanks.
I just wanted to know how long the pain could last - my brain feels distinctly odd and I feel nauseated for long periods if I do anything stressful like get out of bed.
A local told me to take paracetomol but that had no effect. I know that it is dangerous to take aspirin. This disease is pretty horrible.
Can you catch it twice?

My wife caught it first. She just laid down and said that she felt really bad. For two days I felt smugly superior as she asked me for more water to drink every hour. Then I got out of bed and fell over. I couldn't do anything for a couple of days. After four days I could walk.

I know mono is a virus and it can knock you down for a long time, especially if you are older when you get it. I could barely get out of bed for 6 weeks when I got it at 31 years old. Even when you are no longer sick, you have mono virus in your body for life. I guess your immune system just keeps it at a low enough level that you no longer feel sick. Also, I know that when your body fights an infection (viral or bacterial) a lot of dead immune material and infectious material has to be cleared by the body, which can make you feel awful until it has been cleaned out of your bloodstream. I hope you feel better soon!

I think I have Zika. I felt off for a couple of days with weird pains and totally knackered. I could barely get up. I developed a rash like the chikungunya but the pain is different - it is excruciating in the joints. I was taking aspirin till I decided to read about it when I had the dreaded rash and it says do not take aspirin, it could kill you. You can't sleep with the pain as you can't get comfortable so that wears you out.

I think that if you are going to Brasil for the olympics and you catch this then it will be a pretty bad holiday.
