My dad recently told me that I was in fact diagnosed with autism when I was a child. I was never told about this up until recently. In fact, the first time I heard this diagnosis was from my doctor, in my late adolescence.

Was anybody else diagnosed with autism when they were a child? Have your parents hidden this from you too? If so, when did they tell you?

I was diagnosed when I was 7. I first found out by looking at a computer screen on which it was written. But my parents didn't tell me until I think a couple years later.

I was diagnosed at around 9, I think. It was prior to secondary education.

I was diagnosed when I was 5. I would sometimes hear my dad talk about it, but I didn't really know what it was until I was a teenager.

I was diagnosed in 1990 at the age of six. I was not informed until I was thirteen. I do wish I would have known earlier as I would not have thought I was stupid. I thought I was stupidest person alive for a long time.

I was diagnosed at age three. I didn't know what autism was until I was nine. I was told about the diagnosis during adolescence.

I was about four or five and found out around that time, but I was too young to really understand what it all meant. "Autism" didn't mean anything to me, it was just a fancy word and kind of boring to hear about; but I knew some things about me were unusual and different from other children, and some people were trying to help me with that.

So no, no hiding. My family was always very supportive and understanding.

I was diagnosed when I was 2.5 yo. I was probably 8 or 9 when I started being aware of what autistic meant or became familiar with the term or whatever. Nothing was ever hidden from me though.

I have heard many on this forum say they were diagnosed when little and their parents kept it from them, so you are not alone in that.

My dad tried to hide my diagnoses from me because he thought it would help with developing independence.

My diagnoses started in august of 2011, it was finalized and confirmed of January of 2012 which is when my dad found out about it. And i was only told about it in march of 2012. My dad said he saw me struggling and realized hiding my diagnoses from me wasn't helping anyone.

I'm glad a dad is taking responsibility. He's a good example for fathers everywhere.

This thread is interesting; I didn't know so many other people were diagnosed this young! I've felt lonely here, sometimes.

It's strange to me that parents would do that. I don't see how it helps anyone.
