 It's impossible to tell since both conditions are independent of each other. I am "moderately" autistic and have brain damage. Both are separate issues. Sometimes difficulties with one may seem like the other though.

I had complications at birth that caused some brain damage.
Some think it may have caused my autism. Others say autism can't be caused that way. Either way, I still have autism.

The diagnosis of Autism is given when someone meets the diagnostic criteria. If they have enough of the traits and symptoms listed in the DSM or whatever your country uses, and those traits and symptoms are strong enough to impair their daily lives, they get the diagnosis. It does not matter what caused the traits and symptoms. So if brain damage from a stroke or from anything else caused to you develop enough traits and symptoms that fit the diagnostic criteria for Autism and they impair your daily life, then yes, you can "get Autism" from a stroke or another type of brain damage. I don't believe it will work the same as with someone who was born with it from genetic factors but as long as you meet the diagnostic criteria you can get the diagnosis no matter what the cause.

Now one of the diagnostic criteria is that the traits and symptoms have to had been present in early childhood, but if you had a stroke when you were born or a baby than that would fit the criteria.

If you had brain damage after early childhood and that brain damage gave you traits and symptoms found in Autism, you would not be able to get an Autism diagnosis because the traits and symptoms were not present in early childhood. You would just have brain damage. So whether or not you your stroke or.brain damage is what got you an Autism diagnosis depends on how old you were when it happened. You could also have been Autistic already if you were born that way but some people get a diagnosis because they fit the diagnostic criteria from environmental or outside sources that affected them in infancy or very early childhood.

Haven't seen any research that would connect the two.

It is possible to experience brain damage in a way that mimics autism. Technically, it would be pseudo-autism, but who cares? If it has the same symptoms, you need the same treatment.

My daily migraine problem has made my autistic ways much more obvious, but I was always like this. I just tire more easily now. I can't keep up the jig so long.

I can't tell if that is you. In order to tell, we would have to know you before the stroke.

Did you have a stroke in infancy? Does your mother not believe that autism is present at birth? I don't understand how she connects autism and having a stroke given that autism is considered to be present from birth and strokes are not.

But the stroke would have come after the autism, so how could the stroke cause autism?

Hmm. in that case I cannot know. I wouldn't worry though. You are as you are. I suppose both cause symptoms but knowing which was first will not make a difference in anything.

Yeah. Above posters are right. It really doesn't matter what caused the Autistic traits and symptoms for you. The only way it would matter is if they were caused by a factor that could actually be changed. But whether it was genetic or the stroke or even a combination of both, I can't imagine that you can change it.

I think that sometimes parents will try and look for justifications and excuses for their kid's autism so they will think their kid is normal and not truly autistic and just see it as a label for them to get the help they need.
