ever wish you were deaf?

I've actually started to see such people as gifted instead of disabled. gifted with the ability to think, sleep, do... etc... anywhere.

...Yeah. At least in idle daydreams. I have to admit it seems attractive not to have to constantly deal with auditory input. But of course I haven't tried it, so how would I know whether it's any better than hearing?

If I were deaf, I could never hear anyone sneaking up on me.

man, just get a hearing dog. the only downsides are not being able to listen to music (of course this isn't an issue if you can't listen to music anyway thanks to noisy bastard kids... well, that and most music sucks really.), having to use a machine to use the phone, maybe having to read subtitles for movies (TV sucks anyway.), having to use a pen and pad to communicate effectively with someone... and that's about it. everything else is good.

I would like to be selectively deaf.

When I am in the room with someone and they are eating, I want to tell them to stop. Especially if they are eating potato chips or soup. My poor husband...when he sees me cover my ears he tries to crunch "softly".

Also at night. I will often wait and listen for patterns in my white noise machine. Sleeping without one isn't an option, but the damn thing keeps me up some nights listening to it. I can't imagine trying the "waves" option. That would be torture.

I would miss hearing and playing music. I don't mind hearing my kids babble.

At work though, it'd be great. I'd miss all those important "girl chats" about P90X and shopping.

why would I want to be deaf? you can't listen to music if you are.

No. I like listening to music and hearing video games and watching TV and movies hearing sound. I don't want to read subtitles.

Sometimes I wish I had an excuse to ignore people when they're talking to me. But being deaf would be rather inconvenient.

there are times at which i would love to be able to deactivate my hearing, but i could never be deaf; music is an integral part of my life, and i cannot live for a day without it.
guess i'll have to resort to using earplugs for some silence...

No. I am quite happy with my hearing. I can tune things/people out fairly easily unless it's high pitched, overly loud, or repetitious I'm not bothered by sounds.

I'm glad I can listen to music, but I really detest how sensitive my hearing is.

I already do. I have auditory processing disorder (along with the general sensory processing disorder), and if I don't turn on the subtitles, I miss half of what's said. Listening to people in a crowded room is a lost cause, too.

So I guess in a way I already have some of the experience of hearing loss, without the actual hearing loss involved...

Regarding music and deafness, there are visual equivalents of this art form that look quite a lot like dance. You can also visualize music with color and pattern.
