I always see people posting about how they are getting diagnosed because they suspect they are autistic, i cant relate to this because i was diagnosed because a psychologist suspected autism and ordered a evaluation, i was so oblivious i didnt even know a evaluation was taking place.

So i would like to know just how many people here suspect themselves to be autistic or were just diagnosed without them suspecting anything?

I was diagnosed with Aspergers when I was around 11 years old. I didn't know such a thing existed and was pretty annoyed that I was diagnosed with something that sounded like "Ass burgers". I took it very unwell because my parents thought Aspergers was equated to being somewhat ret*d and having no control over my behavior.

I denied having it and never spoke about it until I was about 17 and I became interested into learning more about it and why I couldn't relate to damn near anyone irl.

There isn't an appropriate answer for me in the poll as it's a choice between always or never suspected. I was completely oblivious up until about a year before my diagnosis. But I accepted it before I was diagnosed.

My parents suspected, strongly, that I was autistic because I wasn't speaking at all at age 3.

They took me to psychologists. At least one diagnosed me with autism, and recommended institutionalization.

I didn't know my butt from my elbow LOL

My parents suspected it because my first grade teacher pointed out that I might have Asperger's, but I had no idea what was going on 'cause I was 6 years old.

y parents knew that I had Asperger's Syndrome but I didn't learn about it until a couple months ago. I don't know how past me had no clue that I had Asperges because I was in a couple of classes with other people who had Autism and every year since first grade I was in a class dedicated to improving my social skills.

I was also diagnosed during the butt/elbow stage, so I went with the first option.

The institutionalization part sounds awful. Did that happen or did your parents reject the recommendation?

Same for me. I made it through 58 years of life before suspecting. (I was diagnosed with depression about 35 years before that though, so I knew something was up!)

I was 10 when I was diagnosed.
So before that, I don't really knew what autism is except for the typical assumption let alone knew what aspergers was.

Before diagnosis, I did suspect oddity, but not autism because I'm too high functioning to begin with. So doubt wins due to obliviousness of being young.
Even after calling my NT sister a 'traitor'... For being an NT before diagnosis, doubt from experience wins over intuition that I scoffed off.

Fortunately, my mother rejected the "institutionalization" option--because she "saw something in me."

I final started to speak at age 5 1/2. That's when I turned from being classically-autistic to being Asperger's-like.

I was diagnosed when I was 5 years old in kindergarten. At that time, I didn't know what autism was, or that any kind of evaluation was going on. My mom just told me that I had "a different brain" from everyone else.

I was 8 when I was diagnosed, so I had no idea why Mom was dragging me to all these doctors. I thought I was normal and the rest of the world was off their rockers.

Yeah, it was kind of like that for me. I knew I was being tested in some way, but not why. I kind of liked all the appointments; the doctors and staff were very nice, the tests were like fun challenges... I couldn't understand what it was all for unless it was explained in very simple terms. As I got older I learned things in more detail.

Aargh. My post was eaten. New try: Third try:

Option #2 "I have always suspected autism and my diagnosed proved correct" does not make sense.
The word "always" implies that a person would know about autism from childhood, but the only way a child or teenager would know about autism would be from knowing someone who had been formally diagnosed and having the symptoms explained to them.

How can you suspect that you have something you've never heard about? Or that you have a very superficial understanding of? Someone explained to me about people with Aspergers: "They don't have feelings, you know".

I for one had never connected the dots between my extreme clumsiness (bad luck) and social troubles (stupidity), never mind the gastrointestinal issues (me imagining things) and sensitive eyes (being a princess). Then you have executive functioning issues (laziness) and trouble with following conversations (being self-centered).

Is this what the diagnosed-in-childhood don't get? Because you know about the connection, do you think that everyone does?
