I've been reading a lot about the causes of Autism, and at it's core it isn't a "mental illness", it's a "neurological illness" that's caused by some underlying bodily damage (GI issues, exposure to a virus or heavy metal early in childhood etc.). I refuse to accept this will be my fate for the rest of my life, and I'm just going to simply be past off as "being autistic", which is essentially saying I'm an inferior person in general according to everyone else, simply because I was gypped at life by developing this. Yes, I'm in support of the pro-autism movement, but I still desire a cure, because at the end of the day, my life quality and abilities (motor skills and such) are hindered by it.

The key fix here seems to be diet, and so I ask you all, have you had any success with alleviating symptoms through dietary changes? You know, fixing leaky gut, chelation therapy, restoring depleted vitamins etc.

Please don't lose hope.

At least you can go on a Forum, and pose this question. You're not that bad off.

Most of these so-called "treatments" are the domain of snake-oil salesman.

Before embarking on any treatment course, do THOROUGH research.

I believe autism is genetic. There's a structural difference in our brains, which presents in differences in perception, behavior, and communication. I don't believe autism is an illness or deficiency. You can't cure something that isn't an illness. We just need to make the world more autism-friendly.

Special diets aren't going to work. They might make you feel better but that is solely because you'll be paying more attention to what you put in your body.

A lot of supposed autism therapies are actually dangerous and I'll second Kraftiekortie here. Do your research! Chelation therapy for instance does nothing to help with autism (if you have lead poisoning it's great though!) and can kill you.

I'm also interested in treatments, but nearly everything I've found so far is either experimental or total BS. Hopefully that will change.

As long as you recognize not all aspies share these beliefs...

That would be why I said, "I believe." lol. At no point did I present my opinion as fact.
Knowing my family, I am confident that autism is genetic in my family.
And I don't appreciate the implication that I am somehow 'less than' or 'deficient,' when I know that I am just as much a person as other people.
I'm different, not less.
