I went on vacation to the USA and the people in Atlanta Georgia were so nice in the airport I was changing at. Never met people so warm and down to earth. I still felt autistic but they were easier to talk to than others I've met,

I assume it must be the dfamous southern hospitality!

The smoking area at work is quite a friendly place, first thing in a mornings.

Yes I normally stand there for a good 30 minutes chatting away with people who belong to other companies within our building. I don't even know their names.

I think the anonymity must be the key there.

This *is* kind of a controversial topic, I wouldn't of had the courage to post it. You have balls of steel!

Protestant churches. Frankly, I stopped going to church because I was sick of overly friendly people with no respect for privacy, personal space, or a general wish to be left alone.

Having lived in the South, it's fake. There's a saying, "'Bless your heart' is Southern for 'eff you.'"

I liked Yorkshire in Northern England when I visited earlier this year on a field trip. Didn't have too much time to hang about and chat but there were quite a few students local to the area with us and they were all friendly when we gathered in the tiny on-site bar in the evenings.
I was extremely strung out with nerves for the whole 3 days of my stay, so was expecting a lot of awkwardness conversing with the others, but it wasn't too bad, even when it must have been obvious I was from the 'South'. The locals in the nearest village were more of the reasonable/helpful variety than what is often the case in many parts of Essex, where I'm from.

Broomhall in Sheffield, England in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I think it was partly my own doing, as I'd got it into my head that the inhabitants were a cut above a lot of the people I'd previously met, so I tended to be friendly towards them, and naturally they reciprocated.
Other places I've found people friendly have generally been out in the countryside, so I guess low population density is an important factor, though it's also possible to come up against a small-minded, small-town mentality where they seem to look down on anybody not quite on their wavelength. I've seen that happening though I haven't suffered it personally.

First mental hospital.

Western United States (not California). I had a flat tire break somewhere in the cornfields in Kansas. A farmer picked me up, drove an hour to the nearest garage, waited for the guy to fix it, after business hours, and drove me back. Later that trip the stupid car broke down a local church took me in, put me in a guest house, and paid to have the car fixed at a garage the next day. People in general were very nice there. Polite, kind, and friendly. Nothing like the east coast.

India. I didn't know how to smile before I went there.
Before that, Colorado.

Not New York, but I love it anyway.
