But I think everyone has special interests, and I can't see losing mine if I lost my autism. Right now my big interest is Lord of the Rings Online video game. Which has a forum and very many people have played it daily for years and are even more involved in it than I am. And I think the majority of them don't have autism.
Gaming also has an addictive factor.
Watched once a documentary about game-addiction.
Non-autistics (and autistics) can develop addictions.
I am not saying that you are addicted to it, but special interests are a bit like an addiction for an autistic person anyway, but the point I want to make is that at least a few of the lots of these people you mention might be addicted to gaming.
I would not write this if your special interest would be something like plane-spotting and you would write that you saw many people do it for years.
In that case I would be surprised.
