for those of us singleton aspies with no mates or loved ones or concerned neighbors to look after us, how many of us do ya think will die alone, and not be discovered 'til we've rotted down to our skeletons?

Are you having a bad day AB? We would certainly notice the absence of your pleasant presence here.. and my neighbours would soon notice if I wasn't in evidence and the best of them knows where the spare key is hidden and would check on me, so I am fortunate in having such a good neighbour. It does give me a little extra feeling of security at my age when adverse medical events can and do happen.

no close by neighbors, sister is retired and travels away often. I know nobody here. no emergency alert services available here, they all require subscription and cell phone coverage which this place lacks. just know that if you don't hear from me for more than 3 days, then likely I am indisposed in some major manner. I thought of making this thread as I got some nasty bug that has me feeling like death warmed over. the last time I was put out of commission, nobody knew about it for a week.
I hate it when my body decides to be sick. I gave it a vegetable last week, how DARE IT?! :x

Perhaps you could set up an arrangement with a member here, so that they could alert someone to check on you if you disappear from the boards without prior explanation?

I suppose I might ask Kraichgauer if he feels up to the task. he lives on the opposite end of the state from me but at least he's in the same state.

I don't get this. What about rent and utilities not being paid? Maybe if I read about I'll find out. But I figure in a flat, they would be going inside after rent is overdue. Maybe it was a condo?

her flat rent was paid by social services in England. those of us out in the sticks are especially likely to wind up in this condition, my tin can is modest but it is all mine [god-willing] so no rent paid out. taxes are due once per year, so I got plenty of time to get good and decomposed. :skull:

The bit that surprises me the most, is that her TV was still on. Surely it would've timed out and gone on standby. If it was around before standby, then I'm amazed it didn't overheat or fail after 3 years of being constantly on. Especially with static build up and the risk of fire.

from what I have found from chatting with tv repair people, is that it is not unknown for most of the last 2 decades of CRT tv sets, transistorized except for the picture tube, to be fairly reliable beasts, assuming reliable power. the ones in the hospital I worked in were on 24/7 for years.

I remember seeing a documentary about that woman; it's quite shocking.

While her rent may have been subsidized by welfare that automatically pays in and rent that gets direct-debited out, usually the full amount is never paid, so her bank account would have been depleted at some point. I still find it hard to believe that after three years of the electricity running her funds didn't run dry even if everything was on automatic bill pay. It's all a bit odd.

Something similar to this happened in my own building! Somebody didn't get discovered dead until about three weeks later when people in the hallway noticed the smell. Seriously. It was up on the next floor above me but along the hallway at the other end of the building.

I have no doubt I might be one of these cases one day, unless what finishes me is something I'm in the hospital for. To me though, it doesn't really matter -- still worth it not to have the mess of maybe a bad relationship just to not be alone and stuff. I'd rather die alone than put up with someone compromising my life who I didn't really want around in the first place, I've come to realize.

when I worked in a military hospital, we had a civilian employee found dead of a coronary, in his car parked in the employee lot. he'd been there a week before anybody noticed him. nobody called in or inquired as to his being away from work. he lived alone. this sort of thing is happening too often AFAIC. :|

Yikes, nobody noticed him even sitting in his car in a parking lot?! 8O

I think the best thing for folks like us to do is have at least one contact person for this kind of thing, and ask them that if they haven't heard from us or seen us in such-and-such a time period, to come and investigate further.

Trouble is, I don't really want even that much contact, lol! I have acquaintance type of friends who may not text me nor I them for six months!

I do have work that if I didn't show up they also might not look into it with much concern -- they would just assume I suddenly felt like quitting for some reason, as even though it's a standing appointment situation, it's also freelance and either one of us can say we won't be back next week.

both my older sister as well as my aspie meetup group would notice something amiss after 3 weeks or so. so that is how long I have to rot in place. :skull:

Eww, three weeks! Depending on the season and the humidity levels, that could create a nice, neat mummy type of artifact....or something much messier. 8O

I wonder if having one of those alert things might be good -- do you remember the old commercials that passed into every comedian's standup routine: "Help! I've fallen and I can't get up!"?

Even in the most sudden heart attack, one might be able to press the button on the thing that's worn around the neck, and even if the wearer dies right after that, the medics would be on their way and be able to find the body.

i'd thought of that, and if I can find any that don't require cell service that is something prudent I should do. after i'm in heaven it won't matter but if I fall down and simply can't get back up, still very much alive, i'd like something that would keep me from having to slowly suffocate or starve.
