I am interested in having DNA tests done, like the Genographic project. However, I read somewhere here that autism will interfere with genetic testing. I'm not sure if it was a joke or not. I think autism comes from my dad's side so I could get my mom to do it.

Should I get one of my parents to get tested instead? Anyone (diagnosed) got results back from the genographic project successfully?

No, autism won't interfere with any genealogical testing of this kind.

There are generally three different approaches people take: the "overall" type test that looks in a summary way at everything, the Y-chromosome test (for the male line only), and the mitochondrial DNA test (for the female line only). Any of these is interesting -- beginners usually like the overall test, and then may look into Y and mt for more details, but you can start anywhere.

I'm Y-haplogroup R1b, like most men of generally Western European ancestry.

(I know there are other DNA testing threads here. Try searching for "genealogy" and see what you find.)

1) No. Autism will not in any way interfere with a DNA test.

2) Just remember that autism cannot be detected in a DNA test at this time. Perhaps, sometime in the future it will be.
