Do you guys think that If epilepsy occurs in an autistic child, then the treatment of epilepsy will not make the child core autistic deficits treated or lessened ? Or you believe that treatment from epilepsy will decrease the deficits of autism ? Thnx.

I was successfully treated for epilepsy in adulthood and it made no difference in my autistic traits. Of course, neither my epilepsy or autism are severe.

You may see a reduction in anxiety, fatigue, and irritability but I don't think you'll see a change in the core traits of autism.

I had surgery to get rid of my seizures, and it didn't do anything to lessen my autism symptoms, although I'm still on one of the seizure medications I took (Lamotrigine) because it works as a mood stabilizer as well.

I have epilepsy and am taking anti-seizure prescriptions. There has been no change in regards to my AS.

I would presume that a person with more severe/retractable epilepsy and/or prolonged postictal states could influence ASD behaviour. In much the same way that being ill or overtired can bring out irritable or less social-able behaviour in anyone.

I expect it would also complicate things in cases where the seizures are so frequent they cause learning difficulties.

But, as shown by the responders with epilepsy, it wouldn't change the ASD itself.
