I apologize in advance for this rant, but I just can't take it anymore.

I'm very detail oriented, and it drives me crazy how people at my place of work can live with so many mistakes. I'm working with software testing currently, which has been foisted on me because no one else wants to do it. It frankly isn't bad at all.

At least, when people know how to write. I'm running these test scripts to test software, and the scripts are just plain wrong. Not only that, but I'm not even given the tools to do it properly. I'm supposed to have a "design spec" - that is, a document to show me what the new program pages should look like. It should be easy enough - it's like that game where you have two almost exact pictures, and you look for discrepancies between them. Except no one has the design spec to give me so that I can do my freakin' job.

See, this is what happens to me every time I move to a new job, people take advantage of my above-average intellect and my "can-do" attitude to give me the work no one else wants to do. And when I suggest fixes to makes things better, no one listens. Because, hey, they don't have to do the work anymore, so why should they care about improving the processes and stuff?

It's so freaking stagnant here, it's driving me insane. No one thinks about making things better, they're all stuck in the mindset of doing things the way they've always been done.

Deep breaths... ok, back to work for me...

How frustrating! I hope you're not also blaming yourself if your lack of the appropriate tools causes something to go wrong in the testing process. You can only do so much with what you've got. It's very common for people not to want to change, although if there's a small change, maybe they'd be more likely to follow that. Also, you might suggest to your superviser, "I feel I would be much more efficient if I had the design specifications. What do you think?"

Thanks for the reply. No, I'm not blaming myself, it does make me feel bad though because I want to do a good job and I can't. The problem is the Design Spec document isn't a design spec(it doesn't have what I need... ), so everything gets done in a helter-skelter fashion. What makes it worse is that I'm working on a Quality Management System in an FDA-regulated environment, which means we CAN'T do things that way, and yet we do...
