ADOS Assessment
Did the ADOS-2 Module 4 assessment on Friday in London. Didn't really know what to expect..it all seemed a wee bit childish
First of all there were a lot of questions. What are relationships? What do you think the differences are between a close friend and partner. Done a number of practical exercises including completing a puzzle with some foam pieces that needed to fit into a pattern on a sheet of paper. I completed it ok and asked for more when I ran out of pieces. There were 2 colours, so I put the colours in a uniform pattern. She asked me why I did that. I said I didn't know..just seemed the right thing to do. She then asked me what it resembled.
Couldn't really think what it resembled so I said it reminded me of an 8-bit computer game character. She then showed me a picture book (think it was called Tuesday) about some frogs. She asked me to describe the story to her. Don't think I really described the story as such, more just said what was on each page. I did point out that the frogs seemed to have no trouble avoiding the telephone lines, but were unable to avoid the washing line. We then had a break. She gave me some items to use...a handheld pinball game, one of those things where you put your hand in and it makes an impression using all these little pin things. There was also a spinning top and a metal disc that had some rainbow colours on it. I liked that one. Was kinda cool how the colours merge when it is spun and I told her that. She asked me why. I said I didn't know..just thought it was cool.
She then took out a number of small objects and asked me to make a story out of it. Can't remember what they were in total, but I know I took out a toy car, a red feather, a block and a small ball. I made up the story about the car crashing into the block...the feather was blood on the road and the ball was an ambulance. She did ask me why I lined up the objects when I selected them...didn't even notice I had done that so didn't have an answer.
She then asked me to mime something which I thought was weird. She said I needed to act out the actions I would do to brush my teeth. Felt really awkward on this. I sort of looked perplexed. She pointed at the table and said "there's the sink...taps...toothbrush, now show me how you brush your teeth". Didn't really act it out as such. Just sort of mimed turning on the tap, picking up a toothbrush and said "then I brush my teeth".
Didn't get a result there and then. I have a review next week (13th) where I'll hear the results. Very nervous if I'm honest as this could be the end of a very very long issue with my mental health. When I got this appointment, it was like a light at the end of the tunnel. If I don't get a result out of this, I'll be kinda lost as I know something is very wrong and I really want to know what it is. If next week goes without me being none the wiser, I'll be lost.
There were 2 people there. A social worker and a psychiatrist. They were taking notes. Would love to know what those notes said.
I did a pattern intentionally, too!

Yeah, I "narrated" what I saw on each page, with very little imagination.
One of my diagnosticians (a psychiatrist) was behind a wall-sized one-way mirror. I figured as much when I was escorted into the room. The three of us chatted after. My student diagnostician e-mailed later that day and mentioned that they would take a little more time to consider whether my obsessive-compulsions were more related to my autism or more a stand-alone comorbid. Three weeks later, I got the written assessment report. My ADOS-2 score was changed to 11 instead of the original 10.
It seems to me that you did well. Good luck in any case!

Sounds like the same sequence I went through when I signed up for a study run by the Cognitive Psychology Department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Bawlmer.
My assessment was pretty similar. I had to "read" the book Tuesday as well. I actually thought I did pretty good with that - it's a book I read with my son all the time. I may have sounded a bit nervous though.
I think I really goofed up when they asked me to describe emotions. When I was asked what anger felt like, all I could come up with was "a bubble." LOL

Some of the ADOS-2 test activities seem silly, but are actually meant to observe imagination and Theory of Mind (ToM) skills. So, if an adult can't make up a story about flying frogs, the adult's lack of such skills would be evidence of autism.
Besides, I thought they were silly but interesting.

Greetings. I did the ADOS assessment too. I also found it childish when I did it. I didn't understand why I did it at the time because I did a bunch of assessments at that time. But I don't remember the puzzle piece thing. The main thing about it is I like knowing what I need to do before I do something, and for this assessment, I had no idea and there was "no wrong answer" and I don't like things with no wrong answer.
I remember doing the frog story, the objects and creating a story out of them, asking about definitions of friends or whatever, but not the puzzle thing. And I did the tooth brushing thing. She didn't originally tell me to act it out, so I was explaining it and then she said I needed to act it out. I felt very uncomfortable doing that.
Anyways, hope you are happy about your results. I'm sure you will be able to ask questions when you get them too.

I wonder if thats natural because I feel exactly the same way. As for feeling lost I totaly get that , it feels like my last chance of finding out whats wrong , although since finding out I have ASD traits I have realised my limitations and am now trying to plan my life accordingly.

Everyone is welcome on this forum. You don't have to be autistic to be on WP.
Even if they say you don't have ASD, they should report the test results and that should give you some idea of what to do next.

That's funny, I said the exact same thing when I read that book during my ADOS. Your behaviours during the test definitely indicate a red flag for autism, if it relieves your concern at all. The pattern with the puzzle, the lining the objects up and using them literally (the car was actually a car instead of, say, an animal or a person), the literal story narration and enjoying the merging colours of the rainbow top. Your test sounds like it went a lot like mine did, and I scored a 13 on the ADOS, three points above the autism cutoff. There's a difference between "autism spectrum" and "autism" scores on the test, and you can still fall on the "autism spectrum" with a score of six.

Thanks to Olympiadis for my fantastic avatar!
Well. Im 'normal' apparently. Now im totally lost. They did refer me to psychodynamic therapy tho.
She said there was no questionnaire from my parents. There was. I completed 2. One from my sister and one from my mother. I think they lost them.
I felt this was a life line. Today, someone cut that life line and now im drifting into even deeper water.

Well, I would demand that the clinicians "find" the missing documents, or allow your mother and sister to complete them again.
Apart from the ADOS-2 tests, which tests did you complete? What "a-ha" moments seemed to convince your diagnostician(s) that you aren't autistic?

I feel your pain dude , I think the same will happen to me - no answers to why I feel the way I do
