Hello, my name is Cliff I am new to this forum. My wife says I've got Aspergers; and I must admit to having many of the personality traits. Do people believe that it is a matter of either/or, that is to say a black or white situation regarding clinical analysis or definition, or should it be a matter of degree, that is we have Asperger type tendencies to a greater or lesser degree? My symptoms have changed over the years, with some diminishing whilst others have got stronger. Small repetitive noise really drives me crazy these days. On a bad day the quiet ticking of a clock irritates, let alone the refridgerator or the pc router in the office! I don't do body language reading or play guessing games when others try to suggest things to me. If its not said; I don't hear it. I can look someone in the eye whilst talking to them, but not for too long, after that I've got to look out the window to concentrate on what they're talking about. It just becomes too weird otherwise. Multi tasking is often easy enough; BUT when somebody starts talking, it all goes to pieces. I can talk to a large group of people these days, in the past, especially as a youngster, it was not possible. This ability would soon deteriorate if I didn't have to practice it often because of my work. I guess conditioning and training can over-ride some Asperger symptoms.
I welcome any comment.
Cliff A.

Welcome to WP Cliff. :D
Some parts of my Aspergers have improved as I've got older. I'm much better at understanding what people mean and how I am expected to respond now. When I was 13/14 I had a lot of problems at school with this though. So I think some of it does improve/deteriorate depending on the person. Also, with some people it is more severe, whereas with other's it's less noticeable.

Sound sensitivity is very common with Asperger's. Certain sounds, usually beeping and other intermittent sounds, drive me nuts.

I think a lot of my symptoms have lessened with age. I still have strong interests, but don't talk about them all the time, except on the Internet.

I have a tendency to do things that make people want to reject me, but what can I do? Start an apology thread here?

Welcome....You might want to goggle....Central Auditory Processing Disorder....very co-morbid in AS.ANd yes,it is a "spectrum" each individual having certain "sensitivities and less problem with others.

Some thing do get better with practice and time.Things that NT(Nuero-typicals)do instinctivly,we learn to process intellectually over the years.but it can be very draining and may cause more traits(stimming, sensitivities)to become more of a problem. For me if I am "over doing it"...I will shut down....sleep more, cant concentrate, need more alone time to recover or get totally lost in one of my areas of interest(obsessions).Which is an improvement with how I used to deal with it....drink myself into coma.....

Welcome aboard, home you enjoy the planet...and dont forget to visit Dino-cafe, under "getting to know you".

Hi Cliff,

Aspieness is not a simple yes/no thing, it's a range of traits that people can have, each to a greater or lesser degree. Probably very many people have some AS-related traits to some degree, just not enough to "qualify" for an AS label. You seem to have found ways to use the positive aspects of AS as well as handle the debilitating aspects, without even knowing you were an Aspie. That's a great achievement; good for you!

The act of rejection is the responsibility of those people. You are not making them do anything. Please don't apologize to anyone about this!

So, is it my fault?

Those people are responsible for their reactions to your behaviour. No matter what you are doing, you're not forcing them to reject you - that is their choice.

What are the people who liked me in the past thinking?

I just declare them to be clinically insane and leave it at that.
