My mom thinks I'm normal. My husband told me of course she would think that, I am her daughter so to her I am perfect.

That made me wonder how would have Frankie's mother responded if I were to ask her if her own son is normal and how would my first boyfriend's mother have answered if I had asked her if she thinks her son is normal or ever thought he was when he was a kid and young adult. I should also ask my in laws if they think my husband and their daughter are normal and see what they say. This would be a new experiment.

Well, more or less normal.

If asked, both my parents would say that I'm normal. Me on the other hand, not so much. :P

Well..my folks sent me to shrinks for years upon years. So obviously they didnt think that I was "normal".

But if they were alive today and you asked them they would probably claim that they think I am normal.

I feel so much better. My mom sent me to doctors too as a child and also put me on medication starting in 4th grade and she still tried to say I was normal when I was in 4th 5th and 6th grade. Then she would go "Your father takes his insulin, is he not normal? Your uncle has to take pills or else he will get blood clots." Then I remember being in 5th grade and I had to be sent to the office when I was at outdoor school to take my medicine and I was surprised at how many people there took it including one of the cabin counselors. They had mini paper cups there on a tray with pills in it with names written on them. It was like "wow, many people take pills and they all still seem normal."

Of course my mom has told me how she hated the word normal and if normal meant having nothing wrong with you, there would be no normal people in the world. Then she turns around and says Frankie wasn't normal nor was my first ex. She contradicted herself. I hate it when she does it. I guess for her normal is when you are functional so by her definition of normal, Temple Grandin is normal, Helen Keller was normal. I would be very confused if she said those people were not normal so I would say "hey wait a minute, you say I am normal but you say those two weren't normal but yet they live normal lives and Helen Keller was successful and lived a normal life, is there something I don't know about? What about Temple, she is a college professor and lives on her own and talks to people and acts appropriate and uses social skills, what am I missing here about her?"

Neither of my parents say I'm normal.

You're missing a "Both parents/my only parent say(s) I'm abnormal" option on your poll.

My father believes I am weird and my mother berates me for being ignorant and being too pliable.

Many times I've tried to explain my confusion over a situation by explaining the way I handle it, and illustrating that the way by which others deal with it makes no sense, and my parents' repeated response has always been, "Well, you're not normal", so, no, they don't think I'm normal. It's a little annoying really, because it feels like they're invalidating my experiences just because they aren't like everyone else's.

My mom just says instead "they're not you" and "everyone is different" "everyone handles things differently" "everyone handles stress differently" "everyone goes through depression differently and handles it differently."

My mom thinks I'm different but it took her a while to warm up to it being an Autism Spectrum Disorder. She didn't know much about Asperger's.

My dad also thought I was different. He's been dead since 1994 though so I never knew how he'd react to Autism/Asperger's.

Neither of them used the word normal much, but if I'm going on about how weird or freakish or messed up I am in my head, my mom is quick to say I'm not, I'm normal or some similar term. I don't think she says I'm normal much though.

My mom says I am not normal because I have AS. She believes that males who have AS are weak and/or pretend to have AS just because they are male.

Neither of my parents think I'm normal. They think everything I say or do relates to my autism. It gets a little old.

I got sent to a variety of shrinks and school counselors as a child, but they only diagnosed the surface symptoms of anxiety and depression. My mom still thinks I 'choose' to be 'weird' and occasionally tells me to 'snap out of it.'

in my family it's a subject to be avoided, and it is avoided by all. which i'm okay with. i think by now it's implied and acknowledged that we're all significantly abnormal

i don't remember anyone ever trying to reassure me that i'm "normal". what i remember instead was either being mocked or being accused of being lazy / being spoiled / being insensitive / playing dumb, depending on the circumstance

there's no popular conception of high-functioning developmental disorders where i live. which to be honest i don't necessarily see as a bad thing

My mum used to think I was normal, but not anymore. I don't care. I'd rather be happy than normal. I'm not sure if my dad thinks I'm normal or not. I really don't care one way or another. Life is too short to care what my family thinks of me.
