SPECIAL NEEDS CONSORTIUM (Wellesley MA)
Please join us as our guest at our next meeting Nov. 10. Free event for special-needs families.
All the details about the meeting and our group are below.

Special-Needs and Elder Care Consortium Thursday Nov. 10: Protecting Parents of Kids with Disabilities

While most people know that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects those with disabilities from discrimination in employment, recent court cases have extended the protection to parents of children with disabilities. For example, if a parent of a child with cerebral palsy, autism or some other recognized disability has to leave early to care for the child, the employer may not retaliate against the parent.
Please join us as Boston employment lawyer Eric LeBlanc explores this topic - the manner in which the law prohibits employers from discrimination against employees who have an "association" with someone with a disability.

The NE500 Special-Needs Consortium is a unique group of professionals and parents connected to the worlds of special needs and elder care. The group meets on the second Thursday of every month. We are dedicated to exploring a litany of ways of helping each other including education, sharing clientele, helping families and supporting these needy communities in the broad sense. Members include leaders of non-profit organizations; representatives from special-needs schools; and lawyers, accountants and financial professionals with expertise in these arenas.

New England 500 Clubs Special-Needs Consortium - FAQ
Q. What is this organization all about?
A. We are a unique group of professionals and parents connected to the worlds of special needs and elder care. The group meets on the second Thursday of every month. We are dedicated to exploring a litany of ways of helping each other including education, sharing clientele, helping parents and serving the community at large.
Q. This is a chapter of New England 500 - what’s that?
A. Indeed, the Special-Needs Consortium is one of 21 chapters in the area that comprise New England 500 Clubs, a business collaborative. Our organization is less of a networking group and more of a club — or, really, a team in the word’s truest sense. We’re built on simple concepts like trust, loyalty, selflessness, camaraderie and humility. People who first attend a meeting tend to say “Wow - what a great group of people.”
Q. What’s the time commitment?
A. There are 12 breakfast meetings per year. Additionally, at each meeting, “duo-trio-quatro” (DTQ) meetings consisting of either 2, 3 or 4 people are assigned and scheduled at the members’ convenience; these are informal meetings to further build relationships. Members are also welcome to “guest” at any other USA500 chapter without limitation. We don’t expect perfect attendance, but members who participate more tend to get more value out of the group.
Q. Can anyone become a member?
A. No. Each member must be sponsored and go through a vetting process. The 30-member chapters are built “brick-by-brick,” strategically to result in maximum value to all.
Q. How can I be sure I will bring value to the group - and how can I be sure this makes sense for me?
A. As impressive as it all may sound, the dynamism of the group cannot be brought to life by static description of what we do. New candidates receive a complimentary 90-day trial membership to see what a meeting is like - and so it can be determined whether there is a mutual fit.

Q. How do I get started?
A. Simply fill out a brief profile - this doesn’t commit you to anything, it just begins the process. Visit the usa500clubs website and click “become a member.”
Q. How much does it cost to participate?
A. There are two categories of members. If you are a professional with clients who pay you a fee, we understand that you are here (at least in part) for business development and we will explore a host of ways to drive clients to you. The annual dues for those members are $1400 annually. The other category is “center of influence,” people who are not interested in business-development, but participate for other purposes. These include people from the non-profit world; academia; media; philanthropy and in- house counsel. COIs participate on a complimentary basis.
Q. Do members find that the investment is worthwhile?
A. In a word, yes. Our members have renewed at approximately 95 percent. A portion of each chapter meeting is devoted to members publicly thanking each other for business referrals. There are often dozens of these announcements stretching 30 minutes or more. And a survey revealed that 95 percent of members think they get value out of their meetings.
