Hi, how do you guys cope with sleeping at night? During the summer & winter I must have my window open (this is routine for me so cannot change but also an opportunity to hear noises) not loud noises though. How do you guys go about white noises at night? Bearing in mind im very sensory sensitive

I use my phone beside my bed to play white noise on a 1 hour clip I downloaded on a loop. That drowns out all the noise that would otherwise wake me but it also drowns out my OCD intrusive thoughts so that I can fall asleep.

I run an air filter that doubles as a noise generator.

I listen to different types of white noise on YouTube at night.

I play a 10 hour YouTube video of either white noise or pink noise on my laptop through my TV (one of the picture selections is a black screen). This works great as a soothing waterfall type sound that cancels out my tinnitus and outside noises.

I sleep with a fan as well. The silence found indoors just drives me nuts. I think I might try a couple of what others said they use.

I actually listen to asmr off of YouTube. I used to stream it directly from YouTube but my phone always got really hot over the night, borderline dangerous. Instead I have ripped some of my favourite asmr videos into mp3 format and listen to them instead.

As a kid I never had any problems sleeping but as ive aged it got progressively worse, it took me years to find something that would really help me sleep as I'm hypersensitive to sound, even floorboards expanding/contracting in the night is enough to keep me awake. But I have to say ear plugs in listening to asmr has really done it for me.

I have a white noise generator from the sharper image.

I need to sleep in as close to silence as possible. Even in the summer, I like to keep my windows shut (my street is very noisy) and my fans off.

Another vote for sleeping with a fan. I usually take a box fan with me when I'm staying at a hotel (some AC units cut off and won't run the fan once they've reached the set temperature), or someone's house.

For occasions where I find myself without a fan, I have a free "Nature Sounds" app on my phone that is almost as good at drowning out small noises.

About the only sound I hear at night is a louder than normal car passing by or the central heating/AC which is very quiet. I think back to when I was growing up with a window unit AC and the noise it made. It was actually very soothing to listen to. That was a kind of white noise I liked.

It's quite humorous how many of us seek the sterile refuge of that noble blasting shield known as white noise, the only other thing that soothes me with similar intensity is a raging river or a cheerful rainstorm tapdancing down from the cunning clouds. I can't bottle a cloud or wrap a river up to unfold across my bed but I can smother my brain in constant, loyal and sane white noise! :salut:

I also used a little white noise generator with many frequency and quality options. From experiment, I found a low-ish pitch fan emulation best, as opposed to pure white noise.
Using a white noise generator took me a number of weeks to get used to, and I ended up often combining it with earplugs otherwise it would stop me falling asleep. I tested many, many pairs to find sleep-comfortable ones.

I found that, although white noise helped with erratic nearby sounds like repulsive child noise from other flats, it does doubtlessly reduce the quality of my sleep overall (and could put me into nightmare-like states if played all night). I tend rarely to use it any more now that background sounds are luckily rarer here now. I generally stick to earplugs if I need to.

I find it curious that I am so sensitive to noise in general, but need a certain level/ type of noise to sleep.
