Everything is linked to Autism, everything is also linked to Cancer. (If the media is anything to go by)

So autism is linked to Cancer? :(

wow, talk about meeting new concepts with hostility!

There might turn out to be some truth to it, so my approach is wait and see. Naturally, there will be attempts to replicate the study in other populations.

If it were true, how easily autism could be prevented by simply taking vitamins!

Autism wouldn't exist in large numbers in Australia, yet it does.

It's just BS.

if vitamin d deficiency is linked to autism. then is there less autistic people in sunny countries?
Or is the study done by someone from a sunny country who is calling all other people autistic?..

Hm, 4200 blood samples examined based in one country. If there is any kind of connection between vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women and their children having autism, given that the basis of the whole study is focused upon a single population of people living at the same general latitude, exposed to the same regular amounts of sunlight - it's not enough for a broad statement. Now if they were to pool those studies with identical ones undertaken in many different countries/latitudes, that could be of more merit.
But that involves co-operation. And money. :D

The paper was published by Australians, but it was based on blood samples from Norway. A Norwegian sampling would be expected to pick up some Vit. D deficiencies due to the high latitude. Scandinavia is also a good place to do a study like this because they keep very good records on a national basis.

I still say: wait and see.

I do wonder if they controlled for education and access to medical care. People who are well educated and have the best prenatal care would also be likely to have the lowest incidence of Vit. D deficiency.

Correction: the blood samples were from the Netherlands, not Norway.

I like how no one even bothers to read the article and just jumps to silly conclusions.

Autism is caused by a cinnabon deficiency.

You must eat a large enough quantity of cinnabons if you expect to prevent autism.

In case this isn't a complete honey pot for cranky autists, I have low Vit-D and have since I was just out of college. But, does it "cause" my autism? Probably not. After all, I take Vit-D supplements everyday, and my autism is still there. And, my mother wasn't a refrigerator, Messers. Kanner and Bettelheim.
