I just fixed my laptop today! :D
Problem? Hard drive was broken, so it wouldn't boot (I raged one day and slammed my fist on the laptop, and it must have broke something with the hard drive).
Solution? I figured out how to install windows on my portable ssd and booted up on that instead! I'm so happy!

Good job! It's easy once you know how.

Yeah, quite a bit easier than I thought. I guess I just didn't want to sacrifice my ssd to the cause, but in the end I folded anyway...on the plus side, once I got into windows, the internal hard drive stopped making its annoying clicking sound. :D

Did you try running a hard drive diagnostic check on your internal SSD? You should be able to do it from your operating system if you're now booting that from an external drive. That will tell you if there are any bad sectors and it will destroy them. You can also run the disk defrag tool, as the data on the physical drive may be in a mess.

Does it matter that the internal one is an hdd instead of an ssd? Would that make a difference in how I would go about it, or what?

Uh oh...I think it's actually physically disconnected from the motherboard. It's not showing up in my devices. Yep, I think I'm stuck with the external one.

Did you open her up and take the HDD out?

If you didn't and it's not showing up in My Computer, run the Disk Management tool. It might not have a drive letter allocated to it, so you should be able to do it in there.

Haven't opened it up, but when I took a look at disk management, it said that that particular disk was "uninitialized," and when I tried to initialize it using both MBR and GPT methods, it didn't work for either. I think it'll be alright for now to use the external drive, though. Seems to be working fine.
