ASD can cause anxiety due to social situations; depression due to reasons that are self-evident; a whole slew of co-morbid mental disorders are common in those with ASD too. Anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medication is common (I take both), I believe people also take newer generations of anti-psychotics that also help.
Yeah...I take medication (SSRI) due to OCD and social anxiety (Valium, Xanax and whatever) that's directly caused by my autism.
E: I've recently discovered that the medication I'm taking helps me immensely; I wouldn’t even be able to post here otherwise….
I don't think there is any medication for AS itself, but there are medications available for some of the symptoms of AS as described above.
I take Prozac (used to take Venlafaxine and it made me dangerously ill) which really helps me and also Oxazepam for serious anxiety, and Xanax for anxiety during the day as Oxazepam works well for me but can make me tired.
I am also on the Gluten Free diet and have now adopted a low casein diet. The GF diet has helped me immensely as I used to be either tired or hyper all the time - even as a baby! And now I feel awake, but not manic or hyper.
I also find that L-Glutathione has helped with my anxiety, which surprised me a little, but I'm just glad it works.
But this is just my individual experience and as you can see from reading these posts, everyone is different. A medication that works effectively for one person could make another person ill.
I believe that it is possible to find medications that work for you, but you have to be prepared to try a few different things before you find what's right for you, and you have to accept that you may get a little worse before you get better.
The best thing is to do research on whatever medication you are prescribed so that you are aware of possible side effects, and try to get a doctor who is understanding (I know this is easier said than done!) and try to have good and regular comminication with your doctor.
