I just thought of another example:
My daughter went on a school camp recently. The whole thing is very challenging for her (as it is for me) - sand in the tent, sand in the sleeping bag, dirty, sandy feet and hair, public toilets and showers etc.
I observed other Autistic kids in her group and they seemed absolutely, completely oblivious to all of the above (I've always been envious of that ability).
Also, I've seen some of these kids' bedrooms and they pretty much live that way all the time
It struck me as part of this extremes thing - super, excruciatingly sensitive at one end and just oblivious to those sensory things at the other.
