I make good eye contact when one-on-one, and I seem to be a good listener judging by how much people talk to me about their problems. However, in group situations, the speaker rarely looks me in the eyes, unless he/she is overly sociable. And knowing the speaker, or not knowing him/her at all doesn't make much of a difference.

Eye contact is highly recommended for teachers, but I can't remember ever being available for it as a student, and I'm pretty sure I've never used it when speaking to a group. I think a lecturer might do best speaking to a few attentive people, and would have a hard time scanning all the eyes while still speaking well.
