Talking to a counsellor on getting tested?
Hey so next week I have a session with the school (college) mental health counsellor and I would like to discuss about being tested for being ND because I did research/had friends of mine who are ND insist that I get tested for it and finally now I have the change. I had an on the phone session so they have some of my information/notes on file. What I told them was:
-lack/hard time understanding feelings and empathy. in high school they made us do a test where we had to read facial expressions and i had failed it a few times.
- need of structure and routine, even simple chores like washing my hair i need to schedule and plan out. if i do not, i become a mess and forget to shower/wash my hair/brush my teeth. i need to always make a list of things i need to bring to school and all that.
- hate of sudden changes, noises, over stimulation
other things i want to tell them:
- head/eyebrow/foot twitching- since i was a kid i had these problems, i went to doctors, even a neurologist and they all said it was just me being bullied or something. i still do it today and im already 19. its not just a phase btw its involuntary
- i have no idea if this is related but i had a speech delay. i did not start talking till 2 (making noises) did not start making actual words till 4. i do hear its common in premature kids to be delayed so that could be it
- i get dizzy really easy in crowds, places like the subway downtown or even Costco are overwhelming
- i become a bit too focused/over obsessed with things that i am into, i was always bullied for it as a kid
theres much more but thats all i feel okay with posting
im female could that affect what they think? can they possibly like not consider me being ND since i am a girl?
Welcome to WP!
You have listed some key traits of ASD, so it would probably be helpful for you to see a counsellor, especially if it is bothering you (which it sounds like it is). If the counsellor is unqualified or unable to assess you, they will probably be able to advise you on where you should go next.
Psychologists/psychiatrists/counsellors should be aware that girls can have ASD too, and that their presentation is often different from boys. A competent medical professional will not rule out ASD based on your gender.
Good luck!
