Do you feel people underestimate you when they are aware you have AS or some ASD?

I feel people underestimate me in general, whether they know or not.

Yes and then they go to overestimating me when they realize they had underestimated me.

I've had people underestimate me no matter what. Some of those people knew that I was on the spectrum and some people didn't know.

They both underestimate and overestimate me. There's never any balance.

My college likes to play a little game which goes along the lines of 'you're not disabled - oh wait, you're terribly disabled'. It gets terribly confusing. Of course, neither is accurate, but apparently my opinion on the subject is not worth listening to.

My family always overestimates me but most of other people usually underestimate me not even being aware of AS.
The most recent example: I'm a member of a certain club and they were picking a team to go to a conference. The conference is on the subject that I studied for 2 years. The team leader claimed that they are picking smart people who know the subject. I know the subject better than they all put together and certain members are aware of the fact that I studied it. Nevertheless I never got offered to participate. I guess I don't come off as smart or knowledgeable because of my social awkwardness

Estimating people is a tricky job. :) Too often, the results are skewed...probably due to the application of a faulty measuring system, to start with. Anyway. I've shifted my efforts from trying to change/impact minds of those 'estimating' (judging, evaluating, etc.) me to minimizing 1) the number of people/entities 'estimating' me and 2) minimizing the potential impacts on ME when unable to avoid the results of inaccurate/poorly-conceived estimations. Good idea, or no?

^^^What Pensieve wrote! Balance, something I've been searching for most of my life! I am often off kilter because of other people's attitudes towards me. I don't do anything right, but on the other hand my former boss would praise me only to tear me down within a couple of days. Why is it that some peole think that being overly judgemental is such a good thing? No one is perfect, but before judging someone else, they should learn to look at their own faults & work on theirs first!

I hate it when people act suprised when I come up with a good idea. One time when I was working at the machine we had three polishing wheels break down so they were just put against a wall and forgotten about. I needed a polishing wheel so Found one that started up but had no real power you could stop the wheel safely with your hand. I noticed it was almost the same design as the two other broken wheels so I started swapping parts until I found the ones that would work with it. I ended up with a polishing wheel that could not be turned off with the off switch he had to pull the plug to get it to turn off. But it works. All my co-workers were acting as if Corky from Life Goes On ended up curing cancer.

I did not always use my ability to come up with great ideas for good. At the same machine shop I figured out how to imitate the sound of a CNC lathe or mill crashing and breaking down by sticking an electric metal engraver into the bottom of my metal desk then engraving the bottom of the desk. It sounded like the machines were falling apart. It would send machinists and machine operators running putting the machines in nuetral so they could check the machine out. It was funny because I was in the middle of all the machines and they could not tell which machine it was coming from so they were in complete panic mode. One guy who kept calling me a ret*d so I put a metal trash can behind his machine and an extension cord on the engraver so I would engrave the trash can or leave the engraver in the trash can while using a surge protector to turn the engraver on and off at my leisure. They fired him because he kept stopping his machine and checking it. :P  They thought I was an idiot so they never suspected me as the culprit I was their puppet master. When I wanted to see them jump I made them jump when I wanted one of them gone I helped cause him to get fired. 8)

People endlessly overestimate me, this migh be because my dx was late.

Remember that being underestimated can be a good thing. I've managed to make my share of enemies in my life, must be my wonderful social skills, and several of them have tried to mess me up one way or another. They have found they they both underestimated me and failed completely to predict my reactions to whatever they were doing. This made it fairly easy for me to make sure when it was all over they were the ones left holding the bag.

Now that I've been diagnosed, it's particularly gratifying to know I've gotten the better of many hard-charging Alpha Males. I've made a point of telling a few of them, I think it's cool that they are losers either way. If they win, they beat someone with a handicap, if they lose, they look really stupid to lose against someone with a handicap.

Yes, that's why I never tell people I'm autistic if I can avoid it. It's like once they find out, they're opinions about me immediately change.

People still underestimated me when they didn't even know I was on it. So they don't need to know about your diagnoses for this to happen unless you can really pass off as normal and they wouldn't even guess you have something.
