invade your interests or obsessions?

I find it real annoying and disturbing when people try to stop me what I'm doing about my interests or obsessions or critisize me about it.

I was in Spokane on Monday and Tuesday and I found it annoying when my parents told me to stop asking people about Benny and Joon and just because they live there doesn't mean they will know where everything is and I said "you never know."

I would also find it annoying if someone told me stop stop looking up Spokane and reading about it, same with Benny and Joon. I've had that before when I was 17. My mother didn't like me coming in the resource room every lunch and looking at Benny & Joon on the computer in google images. I can also remember her telling me to get out of London and Dalmatians when I was 12 so I learned to click out of that stuff when she or Dad would come in the office but that method didn't work because they said if I do that then I'm in trouble. I forget the consequence they told me. Luckily they backed off after my diagnoses but in Spokane my mother told me to not ask someone about Benny & Joon after I had asked it.

I can see what they mean about asking people - you'll come across as an irritating nuisance. Go and look up the original shooting locations if you feel like it but don't hassle folk.

The other matters: as long as you aren't bombarding them with Benny and Joon stuff or mentioning it constantly then I don't see the problem.

I hate it when people do that! :( My little sister constantly tells me to "stop obsessing over everything", and today even went so far as to tell me to avoid anything that I might become obsessed with. No one even seems to give my obsessions a chance, they just tell me to shut up about them as soon as I mention a single thing about them!

I wonder if us being bothered by people invading our interests is an aspie thing? I remember there being a question about it on the aspie quiz. One of my online buddies told last night it was.

My boyfriend sometimes gets frustrated when I'm in the midst of an obsession-mainly because I spend more time on the Internet than with him. My family are worse though-they call me lots of horrible things. They don't know about AS though. I hate it at the time, in fact I get quite angry, even furious. Looking back I can see that my bf was fed up for a reason.

I don't tell people about my interests anymore. I'm afraid people might judge me negatively, or think I'm weird. I've worked hard to be seen as "normal" in other people's eyes. I indulge in my "obsessions" only when I'm alone. Cats and animals are a safe interest because I work in an environment where everyone has pets. I generally keep my interest in Roger Bannister to myself, except on the Internet.

If someone asks me about my interests and they seem interested, then I'm more than willing to tell them all about it. It's usually the last time they ask. Everyone here has heard the history of Oldsmobile and about my own Oldsmobile at least 3 times.
If someone bugs me or asks me and i tell them and then they say they didn't want to know--- that is confusing as heck. Why ask, then??? People often do that--- they comment on one of my hobbies/obsessions and then they tell me to keep quiet after they open the subject. Why even bring it up then???

Nobody tells me to stop 'computerizing' :!:
... but they do sometimes try to get me to do other things when I want to be on my computer
... sometimes I oblige ... sometimes I make my excuses.

I hate that too.

What is funny is that when people try to get you to stop doing it then you become even more obsessed with it. At least that is how it works with me.

Yep totally. Especially when the people/person is a loved one and you feel attacked by their trying to stop you doing it.
