Hi,
I wonder if anyone can shed light upon an issue I have.
I am a mature student after a few decades away from study I initially thought I had dyslexia/dyspraxia and my tutor was the one to suggest I ought to get assessed for an ASD. Turns out she is rather astute and I do have Aspergers. However, the other issues haven't disappeared (obviously).

The college (not Univesity) are not equipped with an Ed Psych but say there is a low probability I have either dyslexia or dyspraxia from some simple computer test they gave me. However, it is not 'normal' to substitute paw for poor, or write wheelchair with the w on its side and omit the i, repeat words, write the same word with 3 incorrect spellings, swap words around, and occasionally write a sentence that I have no idea what I mean as its almost gibberish.

To try to understand the issue without being able to identify the cause is exceptionally frustrating and my writing skills are not up to the standard my brain suggest that I am capable of. Additionally, because I am a distinction grade student and apparently have a facade of not bothered and supremely confident I do not feel I am taken seriously. I am not asking for them to 'fix' me but without a DX or idea where to look for information I have no idea what solutions I need to implement to mitigate what is very frustrating and time consuming number of errors. For each essay I spend about 3-5 minutes writing per word of the final product.

Is it possible that this is mild dyslexia and I am just pedantic/intelligent enough to find and fix all the errors over hours and hours of proofing therefore require no help or is this a ASD brain thing? There are indications that I have APD and visual stress among other things. However, I am a self employed, full time student, and single parent to 2 kids and a dog... I do not have the time to carry on this way.

Anyone else experience this?
Any advice most welcome as I do not have the £350 for an Ed Psych.
Cheers.

Based on what you wrote, I would side with the "just Aspergers." You write well.

Perhaps, you have some visual things which might indicate dyslexia---but, like you said, your cognition enables you to compensate well.

There's more than one form of dyslexia though off the top of my head I'm not aware of dyslexia with those specific symptoms (apart from the paw/poor issue- I think?). Do you have issues with reading?

To me it would seem as though you are having a processing issue but you can definitely turn out a well written final product. I couldn't. name your issue but I'm not sure it's dyslexia.

My sister, who is an academic, says that once i have weeded out my errors my writing is on par with her PhD students which is exceptionally reassuring... It is just a shame it takes so long to get a point where I have a finished piece of work. Some of the people on my course can write a distinction grade essay in 4-5 hours, although admittedly most write a piece over a couple of days it is still about half the time I spend on the same thing. I suppose the fact I struggle to remember what I have read once I glance away doesn't help. This is only the equivalent of high school (USA) or A level (UK) so its not remotely high level work, I dread to think what I will be like time-wise at degree level.

Perhaps I need to sacrifice the gym for a few months to pay for an educational psychologist to save myself the from this obsessive search for answers that I am probably not going to find unless I have more time, and time is something I am running very short on.

Many thanks for the replies.
