Overcoming/learning to deal with sensory issues??
I am not an aspie but my son is. He is doing very well and I'm very proud of him and the man he is turning out to be. However, I'm concerned about his hygiene. He never wants to bathe or brush his teeth and he smells all the time. When he does shower or brush his teeth I can tell that the water hitting his head from the shower is very unpleasant to him because of the noises he makes, and the teeth brushing is also too much for him. is there any other way to bathe or brush your teeth that makes it easier on you? A certain toothpaste Maybe? A certain type of toothpaste? A bath instead of a shower?
I can make some recommendations:
First, get a hand-held shower nozzle. Not only can it be aimed only where it is needed, it can be adjusted to a soft flow, so it is much less sensory arousing. Mine came from Lowes but WalMart may have them as well. They are easily installed by following the enclosed directions but you may need plumbers tape in addition.
Second, find a soap that is mild. I use Pearson's Transparent soap. Others make my skin feel like it is burning. Also look for mild shampoos. Alberto VO5 is ok for me, also some by Suave. Get 2 or 3 so he can rotate among them.
Finally, for teeth brushing, if he can stand an electric tooth brush, I recommend it (does a much better job). WalMart has a few different brands. For toothpaste, I used to use one from Toms that was mild. If you can't find it locally, Amazon has their full line. I now use Colgate Sensitive Complete Protection which is fairly mild but not as much as Toms. Its what my dental hygienist handed out samples of.
Hope these tips help. If you have any questions, message me.
