Am I an aspie?
Recently I have been reading about asperger's and a lot of what I have learned sounds eerily familiar. I can definitely relate to what people here describe as faking their way through conversations with things they have learned to mimic. Most of my personality is a collection of phrases and automatic reactions to things that seem to get my message across. It's not uncommon for me to not be able to come up with anything to say when someone tells me something I wasn't expecting. Crowds and meeting new people gives me a lot of anxiety sometimes I don't even want to answer the phone or make a call. If I go to a party even if I drink a lot it's still difficult to socialize with people I don't know well. The things I have read here about traffic and driving seem to describe exactly what I go through when I drive in even moderate traffic. In school I simply stopped doing homework altogether but in almost every class I was still able to answer any questions the teacher would ask and knew the answers to my classmates questions. It was pretty typical for me to ace every test and still get a poor grade for not turning in any work. I also have had various obsessions since I was very little, dinosaurs, black holes, video games and airplanes are a few of the more serious ones. My goal in life is to be a professional pilot for some reason the thought of piloting complex machines in the middle of the night alone has great appeal but for that I have to be medically certified and that means if I get evaluated for aperger's then the issue will come when I apply for my medical and possibly at job interviews since they do an extensive background check. This means I won't be visiting any doctors about it and would be interested in know what everyone opinion on this is. I have always thought these were normal insecurities and other people had them too and maybe were better at dealing with them but after visiting this site and others I don't know if that's true anymore.
Best advice: Go and get an official diagnosis. Really, it's the best thing. It may seem like a good idea asking people who have AS already, but we can't be too reliable. Go to a specially trained doctor, describe all your 'symptoms' and let everything out.
Whatever answer we give you would discourage you from getting anything official.
Good luck.
