Can you recall music in your head? How does it play out in your mind?

Just the musical tune (i.e. you hum it in your head)
Just the words (but no music)
Everything as exactly heard on the CD/download

When I play music back in my head, I hear the song as I originally heard it.

Yeah that. Just the whole production as you heard it on the radio, or on recordings or whatever.

I have a friend with perfect pitch who describes the songs in his head the same way. He also focuses on the song, just as he heard it on the recording, when he plays music. Do you both have perfect pitch?

My memory isn't quite that exact. I don't remember every note, but I usually remember the key, and I always remember the song in more detail than just the melody and lyrics.

I could replay music in my head exactly the way I heard it. And I really enjoy it. I could alter it if I wish.

But on the outside, no one knew I could do this. I'm not much of a fan, and I'm not known to be a music lover.
And any musical potentials I have remains untapped...

I can recall the full music as it was performed, even if i only heared a recording.
If i want to, i can almost see the conductors score in front of me from just a recording (although that part is a learned skill)

Can hear it as I heard it, is this not normal?

I don't get the sense that detailed musical recall is typical for most people. Music is just background to many, so not worth focusing on or remembering. There are plenty of people who don't remember the lyrics to a song they've heard a hundred times on the radio for example. Also, recognizing when someone plays the song differently from the original, versus actively recalling every note, can be different processes too. Maybe I can't always recall every note of that mad guitar solo, but I often recognize when someone misses a note, for example.

I can "hear" it in my head just as it was played to me on CD or computer file. For example, if I have heard two versions of the same song (one studio and one live), I can chose which version that I want to remember. As an experiment, I tried to remember one half studio and the rest as live. I can do it, but it is not a smooth transition, as I start hearing both for a period of time.

My memories of music could be fairly detailed. I can frequently tell that a song played is not the "usual" version.

I listen to Sirius Channel 6, the Sixties. With some frequency, they play a version of a song which I had never heard before.

If I hear about 4-5 notes, I can usually identify the song.

Just parts of songs. Some lyrics. Mostly instrumentals.

For me it varies between just the musical tune and just the words. And occasionally a mix if I forget or don't know all the words or just some of them.

I remember the "music" much more than I remember the lyrics.

I rarely remembered lyrics when I was a kid. I do a little better nowadays.

To answer my own question I can hear music in my head exactly as heard on the CD but might struggle with the words unless I know them really well (but then I prefer instrumental music anyway).

I can also tell if a song is varied from the original - eg a live version over a studio version - and can repeat those differences in my head.

Everything plays back in my mind, vocals, instrumentals, timing and all. I don't know how to play any instruments, but if given enough time, I can figure out how to play a song by ear without using music notation. It's pretty easy on an instrument like a flute or piano. I should probably learn to play a instrument for real though so I can apply that skill and use it to make my own music.

I hear music in my head, the exact same way as I heard it from whatever source----and, I can often guess a song, from very few notes.
