Yesterday I had too go down the sports complex at school because we had too look for the person that my classmate needs to talk to become the manager I guess. Well when I went in there. It was also the hour of the day when the football players were practicing. And I heard them lift their weights and oh my god. I couldn't handle it. I was getting freaked out. And I could of went outside and wait but nae since it was chilly and rainy yesterday. I just didn't like and stand the sound at all. I don't know how they could handle it. And they were upstairs from where I was and I guess could handle it just fine while I couldn't. I heard this is a common Autistic thing. So that's why I'm posting it.

Yes, loud noises are a problem for a lot of people. Coughing, sneezing, squeaky doors, etc. give me sharp pains/headaches. When tired, it's even more intense. Is it that way for you too?

Oh yeah, my ears are extremely sensitive. I always had to be called to the office before the fire drills would start so I could go outside before they went off, because otherwise I would scream and kids would make fun of me. I was also often startled by loud noises in the classroom, and I would occasionally yell out in shock, leading to teachers scolding me for "trying to get attention."

I don't know about being tired, but I've noticed that my senses are even more acute when I'm stressed.

I'm sensitive to loud noise and I'm a football manager. My main job is filming practices, which requires me to stand right next to the loudspeaker. They actually had me in the weight room on day 1. I lasted about 2.5 seconds. Earplugs are lifesavers. Walmart sells them in the Ear Care aisle, and I've seen ones that are made for gun enthusiasts in Cabela's, etc.

I think part of the reason it's a common autistic trait is because we can't tune things out unless we're hyperfocused. In allistic people, nerves stop sending signals after a while because the sensory information hasn't changed so there's no need to keep being aware of it. Autistic people's nerves keep firing. While allistic people will, for example, not notice their socks throughout the day unless they slip down into their shoe, a lot of autistic people are aware of their socks all the time. This is fine as long as the socks are comfortable, but if they're scratchy or not the right kind for the weather they can be a constant nuisance. That's just one example.

Sensory issues for me are worse when I'm sleep-deprived, menstruating (sorry but it's true), and/or stressed. Recently I've learned that grief makes things worse as well.

Coughs, engines,Hoover, beeping, bells, kids crying, several others but one that is one of the worst is on a night when it's quiet and the cupboards in the kitchen creak when I'm in other room.

I also hate loud noises but oddly it only seems to be certain types, or unexpected ones. I was at a football match last night, 23,000 people shouting & singing around me, I am fine with that, but get a door to slam near me and my insides feel like the world is ending

I was actually thinking about starting a thread on this topic a moment ago. I've probably mentioned it elsewhere, but I have sensory issues with loud/ disruptive noise that are getting progressively worse with age. A moment ago, things got really loud in my (open) office area, with people talking loudly and doing who-knows-what with a nearby recycle bin. Then the guy in the cubicle next to me started loudly crumpling paper and whistling.

I've wanted to pull my hair out this morning. And now every extra noise, every conversation within earshot is driving me nuts. I find it nearly impossible to concentrate when there's so much going on. My brain tries to focus on each word spoken, and I jump internally with every non-verbal audible stimulation. Why do people have to be so freakin' loud?

The weird thing is that I really don't recall being this stressed by noise when I was younger, even though I had other sensory issues going back as far as I can remember.

Another example of loud noises. Was yesterday. I was in English class and we got worksheets to work on because there was a sub in there. And the whole class started talking loudly. And my god it was hard to concentrate on the work. But I eventually got it done. And almost thought about going out of the classroom and doing it. But I didn't and finished up the work at about the same time most of the other classmates were getting done.

I'm in the same boat. I wonder if it's because I suppressed my feelings when I was a kid because I was told to act more "normal," but now I'm in a more inclusive environment so I don't feel like I have to bottle things up.

Noisiness is only bothersome when I am idle in it. if I'm doing something else to occupy my mind then its not so bad. This same mind set is how I'm able to go to anime conventions and survive :p
