This happens to me all the time. Executive function deficits common for people on the spectrum are the cause.

Sometimes and sometimes when I misplace things and I can't find the item I go into (anger) meltdown, lol.

Yes, and my mom always gets really mad at me because I can't find things that are right in my line of sight. Sometimes I will search the whole room for the missing item, and it ends up being on the floor or on the couch.

That's why I try to stay impeccably organized - a place for everything and everything in it's place - so I always know where things are. But it does become a nightmare on those occasions when I carry something into another room, get distracted and set it down, then can recall what the hell I did with it.

I wondered if others had that problem - I have face blindness and I thought that might be it - if I put something in the other room it is as though it went into the cosmos - glad to hear others are like that

Well, my memory is like an elephant. I always remember everything were i left something, so i can find anything. Even things my husband left here and there i can find. It's a good thing his butt is attached to his body, otherwise he forgot those too! It's one of the things he's relying on. It's what's keeping this household together. Maybe it's because i'm good at details and stuff, and i'm also very organized. So me and losing things is very rare. What i do experience is when i'm in an environment that i don't know very well (like when i'm in a store or something) and i'm looking for things, i can't find/see them, even if they are right at my sight. I think it's because of the overstimulation and too many details are coming right at me. In my own home, i know every single piece, just because it's my own home.

That happens to me a lot. I was having a hard time finding my wallet. My best friend told me it was right in front of my nose and than he kept on calling me Sid. :O)

Everything in my room has to be in its specific designated spot or it is lost.
My favorite is searching for something I am holding in my hand

Yes, all the time. I try to find specific places for things which is a perfect solution unless you forget to put them there, which I do all the time.

The worst though is when I am at my desk at work, I'm looking for a piece of paper that I know I had in my hand 10 minutes before and I know I haven't left my desk in the meantime so it has to be RIGHT THERE, but it still takes me forever to find it.

This is why it's so important to have a standardized place for all your possessions--and to have as few possessions as possible.

Constantly; it's ridiculous. My ability to visually scan an area greater than 1 square inch at a time is for sh*t.

i get anxious when i cant find something and i freak out, my eyesight becomes jumbled and light become brighter, so i can find what im looking for

the other night i lost my skylanders game and had a meltdown, tore up the house, only to find out 2 hours later it was in plain sight in my kitchen.
