Have people used your special interest to hurt you?
I've never enjoyed talking to ANYONE if the subject of the conversation wasn't about my special interests somehow. Oh sure, I can pretend to be interested, but it's just something I learned to "blend in" and most people don't really care if I'm interested for real or not. But for the most part, I prefer to avoid conversation with anyone. I wasn't allowed to freely talk about my special interests as a kid and if my mom found out something was on its way to becoming a special interest, I wasn't allowed to talk about that without limits either. So I learned it was best to keep my newer special interests a secret. I KNOW people are just pretending to be interested. I've never met anyone in real life who truly shared my special interests and wasn't lying to pretend to be nice or try to earn my trust. I have different levels of special interests anyway and meerkats are a "cover" special interest because they were ruined for me what with all those posers claiming they were "obsessed" with them too. But my TRUE special interest, I keep to myself because people have tried to hurt me with that one too.

Yes, and it's always very confusing when someone does so.
One of my life-long interests is Disney, all things Disney. It's why I pursued my career path.
My parents and partners have been supportive over the years with it, but sometimes (often times when they are upset with me) they'll use it against me, saying things like they "can't believe I still like that stuff"/"why haven't I grown out of it" etc.
But I know that there are other adults (not just aspies!) that are fans of Disney, so I never understand the hate!
