Very curious as to whether or not I'm the only one who does this, but I find myself doing it on a regular basis. When someone says "thank you" to me, I will prompt myself sometimes to say "you're welcome". I'm instantly reminded of my mother always saying "say you're welcome" and I'll actually whisper the word "say" out loud and say "you're welcome" to people even up to this day.

I do it with "hi" sometimes too.

I do it when I'm singing to myself as well-I'll actually say the word "sing" before I do it, lol.

I never gave it a ton of thought until the other day, and I realized I do it on a regular basis, asked my bf about it and he said I've been doing it for as long as he's known me, lol.

Am I just really weird or do others do this too?

I don't know to what extent this is related, but I do repeat things that have been said to me a lot in the past as echolalia - and not intentionally - it just comes out in a repeated murmur when I am trying to concentrate or am anxious.

I tend to do what you describe when repeating instructions to myself because it is not enough for me to 'recall' the instructions 'in my head' - I need to hear them and to 'experience' them in a more real way, and talking to myself in the way that the person who taught me to do the task successfully did seems to achieve this.

I do that as well when it comes to instructions, also with things I need to get done for myself, I'll repeat them over and over.

as far as the extent I meant, I guess it's just every day conversation-I do it with people I know, sometimes people I don't know-like the clerks in the stores and such when I have to go there. Maybe it is some sort of anxiety thing-a suttle reminder. I just found it odd I said it out loud-glad I'm not the only one, lol.

I don't do that. I have to think through what I'm supposed to say in different situations, but unfortunately I'm usually not fast enough to realize I should say "hi" to someone until it's too late.

Weirdly, it's like I have to individually remember to say "hi" to each person. Like I've recently gotten used to saying "good morning" to one person at work, but it doesn't translate over to other people (I've had to really work at this, so I hopefully seem less weird).

I do that as well :) With the telling one person then not saying anything to anyone else type of thing.
I'm really bad about that at my bf's family's house-I never know what to say to anyone there even though I know them fairly well I guess considering I've been around them quite a bit over the past 2 years. But I do have to remind myself to say hi to each person, and when I leave, I have a mental check list with their names on it, marking them off as I say "bye" to everyone.

I think mine has to do with what girl was talking about-my mother was ALWAYS telling me "say this" "say that"-prompting me so that I would do it, and in my mind I still do that to myself at times. It's just funny when it comes out sometimes.

Clerk says hi to me, and I reply "say hi" lol. How stupid I must look :P

I do that as well-I'll check 3-4 times sometimes before leaving the house just to make sure I have them. Any time I haven't checked I've wound up having to call my bf so that he can come unlock my house so I can get them, lol.
