Hello, I once owned a German Shepherd. This dog was with me for 12 years. My relationship to the dog was exceptionally strong as I did not relate too well to people (only extreme characters) and lived alone, with the exception of one woman who I dated for a few months. I considered that dog to be more important than humans, with the exception of my parents and brother.
Is it usual for Asperger people to have a strong affinity with animals?

well, the dog was your friend, you lived mostly alone. i guess even NT people would not consider a human they don't know to be more important than a dog they live for many years with. the only difference is that AS people don't have many relationships with people to consider more important than the relationship with the dog. therefore it is more obvious. although, since we don't establish relationships with people so easily, the connection with a pet is stronger, because it is replacing the desired relationships with people.

Yes, a lot of us get on better with animals than people. Myself included.

I LOVE animals ! ! My very first obsession was animals. Since I was able to read I used to spend my afternoons reading books about animals, trying to visualize what I was reading. It was such a SWEET time !

Right now I'm taking back this interest I had forgotten for a while. I love watching National Geographic Channel, the calendar I have on the wall is made of pictures of animals (zebras this month  ), I own two WONDERFUL parrots, I'm considering taking a cat (80% I will), since I was a kid I have always dreamt of owning a Husky (I will, sooner or later), I LOVE squirrels, the only kind of animals I don't like are insects.

I majored in psychology and that was a BIG help for me, but, if I could start again university, I would pick zoology (maybe I will, sooner or lalter).

I remember a nice episode: I was in a park and there was this dog barking at everyone. Then he came near to me and all of a sudden he changed his behavior, stopped barking and looked at me for a LONG while. It was a great moment.

My gamertag on XBOX LIVE is "Rainbow Gamer", to express my love for nature.

And yes, I feel WAY MORE close to (other) animals rather than to people.

Edit: Oh, sorry, I forgot to answer your question.... Yes, I think it's usual.

Yes, it is very common. I had a Siamese cat named Samantha I was very close to. She was my best friend for 20 years. Animals have always been a part of my life. I couldn't imagine life without them. As my username illustrates, I currently have nine cats, four housecats and five ferals. I also have a dog.

This is Jonnie. He was about a week old here. It's not me doing the feeding in this pic - I was behind the camera. But I have actually fed day-old squirrels! :)
